Neelkanth Mishra Defends India’s Robust GDP Performance Amid Criticism

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures for India have instigated discussions regarding the robustness of the nation’s economic growth. Neelkanth Mishra, the Executive Director at the World Bank for India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan, has countered skepticism regarding the data, asserting that various indicators suggest a strong and comprehensive recovery.

According to Mishra, increased credit growth and diminished fiscal challenge have bolstered the positive growth momentum. Mishra expressed confidence that India’s growth trajectory may surpass per cent, potentially reaching 7.5 per cent under stable fiscal and monetary policies. He emphasised the importance of interpreting the GDP numbers in light of other economic indicators that collectively paint a picture of sustained growth.

Rebuttal Against Misleading Claims

Mishra has also targeted narratives claiming that the latest GDP growth would significantly decline if the initial June 2025 base were utilised. He stated, “I was shocked to see the ill-educated and egregiously wrong claims made by some that if the ‘original’ base of June-2025 quarter was used, growth in the June-2026 quarter would be much lower.” He  shared these comments on the social media platform X.

Mishra clarified that the revised GDP series introduced in February 2026 has rectified previous data discrepancies and improved analytical methods. “The downward revision in the base was known in March,” Mishra noted, adding that this enhancement had increased the reliability of real output estimates. He pointed out that misinformation tends to spread more readily than accurate information, necessitating reinforcement of the truth regarding the recent GDP figures.

Economic Indicators Highlight Solid Demand

Mishra cited several economic indicators that corroborate the strength illustrated in the GDP data, evidencing resilient demand. Notably, vehicle sales are a significant indicator of rising consumer activity. Personal vehicle dispatches, including both cars and SUVs, surged by 35 per cent year-on-year in August, while exports experienced a milder growth of per cent. He further noted that two-wheeler sales have exceeded 20 per cent, aided by strong export performance.

Commercial vehicle dispatches have also increased by over 40 per cent, a clear indication of heightened economic activity beyond merely household consumption. Mishra underscored the importance of consistent tax revenue growth and an upward trend in credit issuance, suggesting that the dichotomy of previous weak credit growth has shifted towards improved supply rather than solely indicative of demand shortcomings.

However, he acknowledged lingering issues within the economy, particularly concerning real-wage growth, which remains sluggish. According to Mishra, it may require several quarters of robust growth to fully tighten demand and realistically address inflationary pressures within the economy.

Investment Landscape Shows Promise

Mishra also highlighted promising signs in construction activity, viewing this as an indicator that investment levels are stabilising. He expressed hope that queries about private sector investment weaknesses would diminish, thanks to clear evidence of ongoing investments. Yet, he noted that the economic landscape still bears signs of slack, underscoring the need for vigilance as the economy works towards achieving full capacity.

In summary, while Mishra maintains a strong belief in the underlying strength of India’s economic performance, he stresses the necessity for continued monitoring and addressing existing challenges to ensure sustained growth and mitigate inflation risks in the future.
