NCW Launches ‘Mahila Jan Sunwai’ Programme for Women’s Grievances

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Mahila Jan Sunwai initiative aims to address the grievances of women across India, providing them with a platform to voice their concerns. Launched on March 8, this programme is part of a broader effort under the Rashtriya Mahila Aayog Aapke Dwaar initiative, which seeks to bring justice closer to women. It operates in approximately 500 districts nationwide over an intensive week from March 8 to March 14, 2026.

This initiative comes in response to the significant barriers women face when seeking justice, including bureaucratic hurdles, financial constraints, and the psychological toll of pursuing complaints. The programme is designed to overcome these challenges by conducting public hearings directly in various communities, thereby reducing the need for women to travel long distances to formal offices.

Women from diverse backgrounds will benefit from this initiative, as the hearings not only aim to resolve over 15,000 registered complaints but also anticipate responding to additional walk-in cases. Priority will be given to districts with high complaint volumes and those in remote areas where access to resources has traditionally been limited.

Grassroots Engagement and Expected Outcomes

The Mahila Jan Sunwai programme will see collaboration between the National Commission for Women and State Women’s Commissions, further emphasising the importance of local engagement in addressing women’s issues. As part of the initiative, public hearings will be conducted by Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar and other state officials in various states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Jharkhand.

This proactive approach will allow immediate addressing of cases. Many grievances, particularly those related to family disputes and workplace issues, may be resolved through mediation during these hearings. This shift in approach aims to create an environment where women feel empowered to seek solutions and support.

Rahatkar explained that this initiative emerged from the recognition that many women suffer in silence due to the inability to access formal systems. The goal is to ensure that women feel supported and validated, fostering an environment where their concerns can be addressed timely and appropriately.

Shifting Narratives Around Women’s Empowerment

The conversation around women’s empowerment is evolving, with many women expressing their readiness to challenge traditional norms. Rajni Bhandari, a working mother, highlighted that initiatives like Mahila Jan Sunwai signify that women’s grievances are being acknowledged. Empowerment for her is about receiving respect and equal opportunities, which should begin at home.

Similarly, Garima Chaudhary, a dietitian and single mother, emphasised that education and financial independence are crucial for real empowerment. Her views resonate with the sentiment that a well-educated and self-sufficient woman contributes significantly to her family and society at large.

Shreya Malhotra, a cabin crew member and new mother, sees empowerment through her advocacy for change. She expressed the importance of her generation challenging outdated rituals that restrict women, aiming to leave a legacy that promotes equality and strength for the next generation.

Ultimately, the Mahila Jan Sunwai initiative epitomises a significant shift towards responsive and responsible engagement with women’s issues. The success of these public hearings will not solely be measured by the number of complaints handled but by the tangible outcomes and trust fostered within communities. The programme underscores the profound need for women to have their voices heard, marking a pivotal moment in India’s pursuit of gender justice.
