NCERT Requests Return of Class 8 Textbook Following Supreme Court Ruling

The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has made an unprecedented call for the return of its Class 8 Social Science textbook titled “Exploring Society: India and Beyond, Part 2.” This appeal comes in light of a Supreme Court decision that has mandated a complete ban on the publication and circulation of the book. NCERT’s notice urges students, parents, educational institutions, and booksellers to return any copies of the textbook to its headquarters located on Sri Aurobindo Marg in New Delhi.

Scope of the Return Request

The council’s directive encompasses all individuals, schools, private sellers, and organizations that possess the textbook. This request extends even to those who have recently acquired the book, emphasizing the necessity for prompt returns. The NCERT has also expressed concern regarding the digital presence of the textbook, particularly highlighting a chapter titled “Role of Judiciary in Our Society.” The organization has requested the removal of any related texts, images, or content that may have been disseminated on social media or other digital platforms.

Supreme Court’s Decision

The public appeal follows a Supreme Court ruling issued on February 26, which imposed a “complete blanket ban” on the book. The court has prohibited any further printing, sale, or digital distribution of the textbook’s content. Moreover, it has cautioned that sharing similar materials under different titles or through electronic means will be regarded as a direct infringement of its ruling.

Immediate Action Taken by NCERT

NCERT has confirmed that the textbook has already been withdrawn from circulation. The recent actions aim to ensure that no copies remain accessible for public use. The textbook was part of the Social Science curriculum for Grade 8 students and had already been made available in the market and classrooms prior to the enforcement of the ban. This abrupt recall has left numerous schools seeking guidance on suitable alternatives to replace the now-banned material.

Significance of the Move

This situation marks a rare occurrence for the NCERT, which is instrumental in shaping the educational framework across India. Textbooks play a crucial role in influencing how millions of students perceive societal structures and institutions. The removal of such materials after they have reached readers is an unusual decision that underscores the seriousness of the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Clear Instructions from NCERT

At this point, the directive from the NCERT is unequivocal: all copies of the textbook must be returned, and any digital representations must be removed. The definitive ruling appears to have been established not through educational channels but rather through judicial proceedings.
