Multi-Layer Security Established Along Rajouri-Poonch Highway for Budha Amarnath Yatra

The CSR Journal Magazine

Multi-layer security arrangements have been established along the Rajouri-Poonch National Highway (NH-144A) to ensure the safety of pilgrims participating in the annual Shri Budha Amarnath Yatra. These measures come into effect on the second day of the yatra, which commenced on August 17, from Jammu.

The highway, which serves as the main route connecting Jammu with Rajouri and Poonch, has seen increased security personnel deployed at strategic locations. Authorities are focused on maintaining a secure environment for the safe movement of devotees travelling towards the revered Baba Budha Amarnath shrine, situated in Poonch district.

Security forces, comprising members of the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, CISF, and other agencies, are conducting enhanced surveillance throughout the area. This includes systematic checks and monitoring of traffic along the route, aiming to facilitate both safety and the smooth transit of vehicles carrying pilgrims.

Coordinates and Administrative Preparedness for the Yatra

The heightened security measures were reviewed in advance of the pilgrimage, with the Jammu and Kashmir administration coordinating efforts between security and civil administration agencies to ensure the safe conduct of the yatra. Considerable attention has been directed towards traffic management and providing necessary facilities along the pilgrimage route.

The Rajouri-Poonch stretch, significant due to its strategic location, forms the primary road connection between Jammu and Poonch. The highway traverses numerous key towns, including Akhnoor, Sunderbani, Kalakote, and Rajouri, which underscores the importance of these security measures.

Close surveillance continues at vulnerable points along the highway, and regular checks of vehicles and individuals heading towards the pilgrimage destination are being conducted. The comprehensive security arrangements ensure not only the protection of devotees but also the orderly movement of traffic in the region.

Details of the Budha Amarnath Yatra

The Budha Amarnath Yatra is a significant annual event that attracts throngs of devotees from across the country. This year, the yatra is scheduled to span 12 days, concluding on Raksha Bandhan, August 28, 2023. The sacred shrine is located at an altitude of approximately 4,600 feet in Rajpura, Mandi tehsil, and is closely associated with Lord Shiva.

Before offering prayers, pilgrims typically take a ceremonial dip in the nearby Pulastya River. The yatra is not only an essential religious observance but also represents a considerable influx of devotees into the Rajouri-Poonch area, necessitating robust security measures throughout this period.

Security and civil administration agencies are expected to maintain these heightened security protocols throughout the yatra. This coordination aims to effectively respond to any possible challenges that may arise during this important pilgrimage season, ensuring both safety and accessibility for all participants.
