Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma presented a Rs 17,469.91 crore budget for the 2026–27 financial year in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly, outlining a spending plan focused on strengthening social infrastructure and boosting agricultural growth.
Presenting his third budget since the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) assumed office in December 2023, Lalduhoma—who also holds the finance portfolio—emphasised continued support for rural livelihoods through the government’s flagship ‘Bana Kaih’ (handholding) initiative.
An allocation of Rs 350 crore has been earmarked for the Bana Kaih scheme in 2026–27. Of this, Rs 150 crore will be used for the procurement of identified key crops to ensure better price support and improved market access for farmers.
The chief minister projected total revenue receipts for the upcoming fiscal at Rs 17,469.91 crore, including Rs 8,608.08 crore from central tax devolution. Total expenditure is estimated at Rs 17,076.92 crore, reflecting an attempt to balance development priorities with prudent fiscal management.
In addition to the annual budget, Lalduhoma also tabled supplementary demands for grants amounting to Rs 3,724.25 crore for the ongoing financial year.
Assembly clears amendment to Mizo Personal Law
Earlier this week, the Mizoram Assembly unanimously passed a bill amending the 2014 Mizo Marriage, Divorce and Inheritance of Property Act. The legislation seeks to formally codify customary practices governing marriage, divorce and inheritance in the state.
The amendment bill was introduced by Lalduhoma in his capacity as Minister for Law and Judicial Affairs. The revised law incorporates key changes to traditional norms, particularly concerning polygamy, inter-community marriages and the property rights of women.
The move is seen as a significant step towards providing greater legal clarity and strengthening social justice within the framework of Mizo customary law.
