Mistaken Identity: Abduction and Death of Gurudwara Cook Not Targeted Incident

The CSR Journal Magazine

Avtaar Singh, a 57-year-old volunteer and cook at the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Parkash in Tracy, California, was found deceased following his abduction earlier this month. Authorities confirmed that he was reported missing on February 17 after allegedly being kidnapped from the temple premises. Surveillance footage revealed a white SUV with three individuals dressed in dark clothing involved in the abduction, with Singh appearing to enter the vehicle unwillingly.

Authorities Confirm Mistaken Target

San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow indicated that Singh was not the individual the kidnappers intended to target. He emphasized that this incident was not random, indicating the presence of a specific motive related to another individual. However, officials have yet to disclose additional details regarding this motive or how Singh ended up near Napa County, where his body was ultimately discovered.

Discovery of the Body

Three days after his abduction, Singh’s body was recovered near Lake Berryessa, located nearly 100 miles from Tracy. The vehicle suspected to have been used in the crime was found at the scene alongside his remains. Following the confirmation of his death, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office expressed deep sorrow at the loss of Singh, detailing ongoing efforts by detectives to investigate the case and identify those involved.

Community Response

San Joaquin District Attorney Ron Freitas addressed the gurdwara community, describing Singh as an innocent victim who bore no responsibility for the tragedy that befell him. He called upon anyone with information about the case to step forward, noting that there were individuals who might possess valuable insights. Singh was widely recognized for his commitment to the Sikh community and his kindness, often remembered for his reliability and willingness to assist others.

Legacy of Service

Singh had dedicated many years of service to institutions connected with Damdami Taksal, making substantial contributions at the Tracy gurdwara where he also resided. Community members fondly reflected on his selfless nature, highlighting how his presence brought a familial atmosphere to the temple. A fundraiser established to assist his family noted his admirable qualities, underscoring the significant void his passing has created among his loved ones and the broader community.

Funeral Arrangements

The funeral for Avtaar Singh is set to take place at Fry Memorial Chapel, with subsequent prayers and a community meal scheduled at the gurdwara. As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and subsequent death of Singh, authorities urge anyone with pertinent information to reach out to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office to assist in advancing the investigation.
