Mayawati Reinstates Akash Anand as BSP National Coordinator

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati has reinstated her nephew Akash Anand as the national coordinator of the party, signalling a critical shift in the party’s internal dynamics. This return goes beyond merely regaining an organisational title as Anand is poised to take a more active role in Uttar Pradesh politics ahead of the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections. The political landscape is seeing a notable change as the BSP gears up for these crucial elections.

Anand’s immediate challenge will be the BSP’s major event in Lucknow on October 9, commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar. While he is not expected to appear on stage, party insiders suggest he will play a role in managing organisational arrangements as well as developing strategic plans behind the scenes. His visibility in BSP activities is anticipated to increase significantly in the approaching weeks.

On November 1, Anand is likely to address a public meeting in an Assembly constituency in Ayodhya, with the BSP expected to announce its candidate, Jitendra Singh Babloo, during this event. This marks Anand’s third re-entry into a prominent role following his previous removals, making this reinstatement a significant move for the party.

Background to Anand’s Reinstatement

The reconciliation between Mayawati and Anand was facilitated by a productive meeting at Mayawati’s residence in Lucknow, following a period of uncertainty regarding Anand’s political future. The discussions reportedly focused on the strained relationship between Anand and his father-in-law Ashok Siddharth, a former BSP leader who was central to the disputes leading to Anand’s previous removals. In earlier instances, Mayawati had accused him of prioritising family interests over the BSP and its objectives.

After publicly apologising to Mayawati, Anand expressed his steadfast commitment to the BSP, describing her as his political mentor and referring to her affectionately as “Buaa Maa.” This public show of devotion, coupled with his pledge to contribute to the party’s cause, positioned him favourably for reinstatement. Mayawati indicated that the decision to restore Anand was made in the BSP’s best interest and did not foresee any future separation now that Siddharth has stepped back from active politics.

Mayawati’s comments have aimed to provide context to Anand’s previous exits and subsequent returns, suggesting that he had shown dedication to the BSP before his marriage and that family ties had complicated his political trajectory.

Future Expectations for Akash Anand in Politics

While Anand’s reinstatement as national coordinator is a significant step, his role in Uttar Pradesh politics may expand further as the party approaches the 2027 elections. Previously, he had been largely distanced from active political participation in the state, but his return comes at a critical juncture. This timing enables Mayawati to present a prominent figure for organisational outreach and public engagements, depending on strategic decisions by the party leadership.

The BSP has been adjusting its leadership structure, with Anand’s younger brother, Ishan Anand, having served as national coordinator before Akash’s return. This evolving leadership landscape reflects the party’s efforts to galvanise its next generation for the impending electoral battle.

With Mayawati signalling a desire for stability in Anand’s position, this move appears aimed at dispelling doubts regarding his role in the organisation. Anand has assumed a conciliatory stance since being reintegrated, acknowledging valuable lessons learned during his time away from the active leadership role. His welcoming back by veteran leaders at a recent meeting indicates a reinvigoration of party unity and shared objectives as they prepare for the electoral campaign ahead.
