Matheesha Pathirana Cleared for IPL 2026 Season, Boosting KKR’s Pace Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have received a significant boost ahead of the IPL 2026 season with the announcement from Sri Lanka Cricket that fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana is fit to participate. This confirmation alleviates concerns for KKR regarding their pace bowling options, which have been impacted by injuries recently. According to Bandula Dissanayake, secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket, Pathirana has successfully completed his rehabilitation and has been granted clearance to join the team’s roster for the upcoming season. Nonetheless, KKR intends to evaluate his condition before finalizing his participation.

Injury Background of Pathirana

Pathirana’s injury history includes a hamstring issue sustained during Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup 2026 group match against Australia, which sidelined him for the remainder of the tournament. Sri Lanka was eliminated in the Super 8 stage. Dissanayake conveyed that while Pathirana has regained fitness and received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in the IPL, it remains the team’s responsibility to determine his readiness. “As far as I know, he’s fit and we have given him NOC to participate in the IPL,” Dissanayake stated.

KKR’s Upcoming Matches and Pathirana’s Role

At present, there is no set date for when Pathirana will join the KKR squad. The team is scheduled to depart for Mumbai on March 25 in preparation for their opening match against the Mumbai Indians on March 29. Following this, KKR will host three successive home matches at Eden Gardens, facing Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2, Punjab Kings on April 6, and Lucknow Super Giants on April 9. The integration of Pathirana during this critical period could bolster KKR’s bowling unit significantly.

Pathirana’s Performance and Expectations

During the IPL 2026 auction, KKR acquired Matheesha Pathirana for a sum of Rs 18 crore as part of their strategy to revamp their roster after a disappointing eighth-place finish in the 2025 season. Pathirana, known for his evolution as a T20 specialist with the Chennai Super Kings, began his IPL career in 2022. He has participated in 32 matches, taking a total of 47 wickets. However, his performance in the 2025 season revealed some concerns, as he secured only 13 wickets from 12 matches with an economy rate of 10.14 and an average of 32.62.

KKR’s Pace Attack Challenges

The Kolkata Knight Riders have been navigating challenges within their pace attack leading into the new season. Fast bowler Harshit Rana is currently in recovery from a ligament strain in his right knee and is anticipated to miss the entirety of this season. Additionally, Bangladesh’s seam bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released earlier in the year per a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). KKR has since filled that gap with the addition of Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani. As these adjustments are made, the team’s ability to adapt and succeed will be crucial in the upcoming IPL season.
