Mass Evacuations Launched as Severe Floods Strike Six Odisha Districts

The CSR Journal Magazine

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced that six districts in the state are currently experiencing significant flooding, resulting in large-scale evacuation efforts. On August 18, Majhi revealed details around the ongoing emergency response, emphasising that efforts to rescue those affected are intensifying amid continued rainfall and rising river levels. He noted his recent visit to Jajpur and Bhadrak districts to personally assess the flood conditions and coordinate relief measures.

Impact on Communities and Evacuation Efforts

According to the Chief Minister, the floods have impacted ten blocks and 270 villages within Jajpur, alongside one urban area. The response has seen more than 200,000 residents evacuated, with approximately 77,680 individuals relocated to safer locations. The establishment of 291 relief camps has been a critical part of the immediate response effort to ensure that displaced families receive the necessary support.

In Bhadrak district, the flooding has affected four blocks, impacting 134 villages and one urban area. The Chief Minister reported that an estimated 196,240 people are facing varying degrees of disruption due to the flooding. Additionally, other districts such as Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Kendrapara have also reported similar flood-related issues, bringing the total number of affected districts to six.

Majhi noted that the regions of Baleswar and Bhadrak have repeatedly encountered such flooding scenarios. In response, 39 teams from the National Disaster Response Force and 51 units from the Fire Service have been deployed to facilitate rescue operations. The Chief Minister underscored the need for immediate measures to alleviate the difficulties faced by the displaced population.

Government Assistance and Educational Impact

The state government has provided financial assistance totalling Rs 136 crore, which is being distributed in instalments to support relief efforts. Majhi stated that a reassessment of the situation would inform any potential easing of restrictions currently in place. This assistance aims to address immediate needs as the rescue operations continue across the affected areas.

In a concerning development, more than 300 students at Pattamundai Kulsahi Ashram School in Kendrapara district have been directly affected by rising floodwaters. The Higher Education Minister, Suryabanshi Suraj, mentioned that authorities are adhering to established Standard Operating Procedures, which include the distribution of dry rations and the provision of community kitchen facilities to assist those in need.

Various blocks, including Dhamnagar, Bhandaripokhari, Chandbali, and Tihidi, remain submerged, with Dhamnagar alone reportedly seeing 20 to 22 panchayats inundated. Furthermore, the India Meteorological Department reported that as of August 15, floodwaters had impacted 429 villages across 52 blocks. In terms of operational capacity, 79 rescue teams have been mobilised to manage the crisis effectively.

Ongoing Monitoring and Future Rainfall Predictions

Authorities are maintaining a vigilant stance on vulnerable areas as the situation develops. The Central Water Commission has issued warnings about potential flash floods in certain regions, and the IMD predicts further heavy rainfall, issuing alerts for 11 districts. The government is prioritising coordination efforts among various agencies to ensure the smooth distribution of relief supplies and enhance medical preparedness in response to emerging needs.

The ongoing response to the flooding situation in Odisha remains a dynamic process, with officials closely monitoring conditions and adjusting plans to provide the utmost support to affected communities. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, as the state navigates the challenges posed by the severe weather conditions.
