Mamata Banerjee Accuses Election Commission of EVM Manipulation

The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made pointed accusations against the Election Commission, claiming attempts to manipulate electronic voting machines (EVMs) and infringe on the voting rights of citizens ahead of forthcoming elections. Banerjee stated that the fundamental right to vote is being undermined prior to the polls, criticizing irregularities in the voter list revision process. She emphasized the gravity of the situation, citing that over 190 individuals have lost their lives due to violence, and admonished the Election Commission for remaining silent on these deaths. Banerjee claimed the souls of the deceased would demand accountability, urging the Election Commission to refrain from intimidation tactics.

In her statements, Banerjee expressed concerns that authorities were devising plans to manipulate EVMs while simultaneously eroding citizens’ voting rights. She questioned the application of logical discrepancies in previous electoral processes, particularly referring to the situation in Bihar. Banerjee accused the authorities of employing artificial intelligence inappropriately to alter voter names, insisting that ordinary citizens should not face the repercussions of such actions.

As tensions escalated, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar encountered protests during his visit to West Bengal. Demonstrators displayed black flags and chanted slogans urging him to leave as he arrived and departed from the Dakshineswar Kali temple for prayers. In response, Kumar stated that the Election Commission is committed to ensuring violence-free elections in the state.

Amid these developments, discussions regarding a potential impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner have gained momentum. Sources indicate that opposition parties, led by the Trinamool Congress, are in the process of collecting signatures necessary to initiate this motion against Kumar. Reports suggest that the campaign has already commenced, with the impeachment motion anticipated to be presented in Parliament within the week.

Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has indicated that the party intends to pursue the impeachment motion. Mamata Banerjee has also previously condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly abusing democratic institutions, characterizing the current political climate as an “unprecedented and deeply unfortunate assault” on democracy. She accused the ruling party of leveraging constitutional institutions towards what she referred to as “anti-people ambitions” in pursuit of a “One Nation, One Leader, One Party” agenda.
