LinkedIn has revealed that a significant proportion of Indian Gen Z professionals, approximately 83 per cent, are failing to engage in professional networking, thereby potentially hindering their access to vital career opportunities. Despite spending a considerable amount of time online, this generation appears to find it challenging to build meaningful connections within their professional circles.

According to the findings, 79 per cent of Indian Gen Z acknowledges the crucial nature of professional relationships in career advancement. Nevertheless, a significant portion, specifically 52 per cent, reportedly lacks knowledge on how to initiate these crucial connections. This gap highlights a pressing need for guidance in navigating professional networking.

Among the various hindrances, many youngsters cited personal concerns as a barrier to networking. Approximately 44 per cent expressed fears regarding judgement by others, while 39 per cent were apprehensive about bothering potential contacts. Additionally, 37 per cent indicated they worried about presenting themselves as inauthentic when reaching out.

The Need for Guidance in Building Connections

The primary issue for many young professionals does not stem from a lack of desire, but rather from insufficient direction on how to effectively network. LinkedIn’s research indicates that 59 per cent of Gen Z individuals feel that they have not been adequately shown how to develop professional relationships.

Moreover, over half, specifically 53 per cent, acknowledged difficulty in transforming initial professional contacts into substantial connections. This conversion becomes vital when seeking employment, as data from LinkedIn illustrates that applicants with pre-existing connections are nearly 8.5 times more likely to secure a position compared to those without such ties.

Interestingly, 30 per cent of Gen Z respondents noted that they had successfully found their next job through their online professional communities. Regular engagement on the LinkedIn platform also enhances networking prospects, with members being approximately three times more likely to receive connection requests following interactions with posts from their network.

Receptiveness of Experienced Professionals

While Gen Z professionals express apprehension about initiating conversations with more experienced individuals, LinkedIn’s study suggests that older professionals are open to assisting younger workers more than anticipated. A considerable 92 per cent of Millennials and 95 per cent of Gen X professionals who participated in the survey indicated willingness to provide advice or support to newcomers in the industry, even without prior acquaintance.

Nirajita Banerjee, a LinkedIn Career Expert and Senior Managing Editor at LinkedIn News in India, remarked on the evolving nature of job roles, emphasising that the ability to develop meaningful relationships is becoming as crucial as skills development. She highlighted that networking doesn’t always involve formal introductions or cold messages but can start with simpler actions like commenting on posts and expressing opinions on relevant topics.

Banerjee further recommended that young professionals connect with individuals sharing common interests, such as educational background or industry. By engaging with someone’s content prior to sending a connection request, the process may be less daunting. Building relationships proactively is also encouraged, with the suggestion to connect with potential contacts before a job search arises, thus ensuring a network is established that can support them when needed.
