‘Let Them Sink Together’: Trump’s Tariff Bomb Targets India and Russia

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump criticized India and Russia in a recent post on Truth Social, saying he doesn’t care about the trade dealings between the two nations. He added, “They both can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.” The post further stated, “We have done very little business with India; their tariffs are too high—among the highest in the world. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let’s keep it that way.”

Despite calling India a “friend,” Trump emphasized that a 25% tariff would be applicable. He wrote, “Over the years, we have done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high—among the highest in the world—and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers of any country.”

Meanwhile, the Opposition in India is targeting the Modi government over Trump’s move. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Congress party wrote, “The country is now bearing the cost of Narendra Modi’s ‘friendship’.” The post highlighted Modi’s past support for Trump, including campaigning, hugging, posing for photos, and making it trend on social media—only to face tariffs in return. The Opposition has also called India’s foreign policy a complete failure.

In addition to the 25% tariff, Trump has imposed penalties on India for purchasing energy and arms from Russia. He also targeted India and China for supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine. He wrote,
“Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia and are Russia’s largest buyer of energy… at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine. India will, therefore, be paying a tariff of 25%, plus a penalty for the above, starting August 1.”
