Kota Airport Project Launched with Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Kota-Bundi Greenfield Airport, a pivotal project costing Rs 1,507 crore. This significant infrastructure development is anticipated to enhance connectivity and drive economic growth in the Hadoti region, which encompasses the districts of Kota, Bundi, Baran, and Jhalawar. In a video message delivered during the event, the Prime Minister acknowledged the rapid advancements seen in Rajasthan, highlighting improvements across various sectors.

During the ceremony, PM Modi underscored the importance of the day as a landmark moment for Hadoti, stating that the new airport will offer substantial momentum for regional development. He noted, “Development programs in Rajasthan within a single week convey a powerful message. They reflect the swift pace at which the state is advancing today. Work is progressing in various sectors, including infrastructure and employment opportunities, affecting youth as well as farmers and women.”

The Prime Minister recalled his visit to Kota in November 2023, where he assured residents that the dream of the airport would soon materialize. He emphasized that once operational, the airport will greatly enhance connectivity for Kota and its surrounding areas, making travel more convenient and fostering a favorable environment for business growth. “Until now, residents had to travel to Jaipur or Jodhpur to catch flights, which was time-consuming,” he remarked, affirming that the new infrastructure will change this scenario.

PM Modi also highlighted the enhanced connectivity from Kota, noting that improvements in road and rail infrastructure are attracting new investments and establishing the region as a hub for agro-based industries. He pointed out that the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway running through Kota and Bundi is facilitating development opportunities. “With better connectivity in place, we are creating a major center for agro-based industries in the region,” he said.

Kota, situated on the banks of the Chambal River, is recognized as Rajasthan’s industrial capital and an educational coaching hub. The introduction of the Greenfield Airport is deemed essential for meeting the projected increase in traffic and supporting local and regional economic activities.

The Prime Minister mentioned that India has witnessed a significant expansion in the number of airports over the past 11 years, with numbers rising from around 70 to over 160. This expansion has simplified air travel, bolstered tourism, and spurred job creation, thus influencing regional growth positively. He referred to new airports operational in the vicinity of the national capital and expressed confidence that the new airport in Kota would similarly boost the region’s progress.

Furthermore, PM Modi expressed that cooperation between state and central governments is fundamental in advancing development initiatives. He articulated optimism about the project’s contribution to Rajasthan’s economic landscape and the broader national goals of progress. “When both levels of government collaborate effectively, development accelerates,” he noted, reinforcing the notion of a prosperous Rajasthan contributing to a developed India.

As per the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, the Rajasthan Government has allocated 440.06 hectares of land to the Airports Authority of India for the airport’s construction, which will facilitate operations for A-321 type aircraft. The investment will cover the construction of a 20,000 sqm terminal building with a capacity of handling up to 2 million passengers annually, alongside comprehensive facilities such as a runway and parking bays.

The current Kota Airport, managed by the Airports Authority of India, features a smaller terminal and runway unsuitable for commercial expansion due to inadequate land and urban development around the facility. This project seeks to transform the air travel landscape for the region significantly.
