Kolkata Police to get advanced breath analyser devices to curb drunk driving in festive season

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kolkata Police is buying 50 state-of-the-art breath analysers with an aim to curb drunk driving and reduce road accidents. These will be handed over to 26 traffic guards in the city. The modern breath analysers Kolkata Police is planning to buy, comes with its own memory.

The trend of drunk driving generally increases during the ongoing festive season which starts with Durga Puja in West Bengal. Especially at night, many people may return home drunk from bars, clubs and parties. And drunk driving can lead to fatal accidents.

Breath Analyser device comes with own memory, hence driver cannot challenge police

Often drunk car or two-wheeler drivers claim after a few days that they were not drunk that day to avoid fines. Therefore, to prevent anyone from making this claim, this modern breath analyser is equipped with its own memory. The device’s memory contains ten thousand records, which include time, date, and alcohol content. Later, if a driver ‘challenges’ the police, this device will produce the record.

Device will be password locked to prevent data tampering

In addition, the device’s records will include the vehicle number, which officer is conducting the test and other necessary details. There will be a ‘data protection’ system with a password lock to prevent anyone from tampering with the data or information of this device. Police says, this will make it easier to catch drunk drivers. Reportedly, more than Rs 22 lakhs is being spent to buy these 50 modern breath analysers. This time, the police are making arrangements so that even if a drunk driver blows from a distance, the results appear on the screen within a few seconds.

Tendency to drink and drive increases in festive season

Even after the state’s biggest festival Durga Puja is over, the festive spirit remains. From Diwali and Kali Puja to Christmas or New Year’s Eve, the entire state, including Kolkata, will be celebrating festivals. And with it, the tendency to drive a car or bike while intoxicated increases. To prevent road accidents due to this, especially at night, breath test will be done by the police on various roads of the city. Officers of the traffic guards in Kolkata who will be in charge of breath test will be equipped with these modern breath analyser devices. Currently, every traffic guard, even the police stations, have a breath analyser, but these are a slightly old model. Therefore, the police are getting this upgraded device, which is also lightweight, weighing not more than 300 grams.

Drivers can no longer fool cops

This breath analyser will have modern sensors on top. It has been seen many times that if a driver is drunk, he does not want to blow hard. He also tries to blow from such a distance that the sensor does not detect it. But these tricks will not work with this new device. Even if you blow from a considerable distance, this device will take ten seconds to understand the amount of alcohol, which will be displayed on the 3.2-inch LCD display touch screen. The police said that necessary action will be taken according to the amount of alcohol consumed by the person driving the car.
