Kerala May Soon Be Renamed Keralam: Cabinet Approval Expected

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Union Cabinet is likely to approve a proposal to rename the state of Kerala to Keralam during a meeting set for Tuesday. Union ministers have been instructed to arrive early, as a photograph session may take place prior to the cabinet discussions. Notably, this meeting will be the inaugural gathering at Seva Teerth, the new Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Cabinet Secretariat facility.

Background of the Name Change Proposal

The move follows a resolution passed by the Kerala state assembly, which called upon the central government to initiate a constitutional amendment to alter the state’s name from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralam.’ Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan introduced the resolution, which sought actions under Article 3 of the Constitution to amend the First Schedule to reflect the new name. The chief minister highlighted that ‘Keralam’ is the term used in the Malayalam language and pointed out that the demand for a unified Kerala for Malayalam-speaking people has been a longstanding request since the country’s struggle for independence.

Details of the Assembly Resolution

The resolution advocating for the name change was unanimously approved by the state assembly in August 2023. It emphasized the need for the central authority to change the State’s name in the First Schedule of the Constitution to ‘Keralam.’ Additionally, the assembly sought that the new name be reflected in all languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. However, upon further examination, it was determined that the amendment was necessary solely for the First Schedule.

Next Steps Following Cabinet Approval

Should the Union Cabinet grant approval for this name change, the next step will involve the introduction of the necessary amendment in Parliament. The process will require careful discussion and consensus among lawmakers, followed by formal ratification. If successful, it will mark a historic shift in how the state is recognized both legally and culturally within India.

Public Reactions and Future Implications

The public response to the proposed name change has been mixed, with some residents expressing enthusiasm for the transition, while others remain cautious about the implications of such a change. Considerations regarding official documentation, signage, and other administrative aspects will need to be addressed to ensure a smooth transition should the name be officially altered. This venture signifies a manifestation of regional identity and the broader conversation around linguistic representation in governmental frameworks.
