Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Seeks Intervention on Commercial LPG Shortage in Bengaluru

The CSR Journal Magazine

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has reached out to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, in an urgent letter regarding a serious shortage of commercial Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Bengaluru. The Chief Minister indicated that complications in supply, attributed to a recent directive from the central government, are pushing establishments such as restaurants, hotels, and catering services toward potential temporary closure.

Concerns Over Commercial Supply Crisis

Siddaramaiah articulated in his correspondence that a revised order from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, which appeared to favor domestic LPG supply, has inadvertently triggered a crisis for commercial users in the region. He acknowledged the rationale behind the initiative aimed at securing a steady LPG supply for households across India; however, he emphasized that its execution has led to unintended consequences, particularly impacting commercial LPG availability in Bengaluru.

Impact on Local Businesses

“The city’s hotel and restaurant associations have reported significant difficulties in sourcing commercial LPG cylinders,” the letter noted. Many businesses are expressing anxiety over a potential need to cease operations temporarily if the supply is not swiftly reinstated. The Chief Minister pointed out that Bengaluru hosts a vast network of small restaurants, catering units, and mess facilities that serve a large number of individuals daily.

Wider Implications for the Community

In his letter, Siddaramaiah highlighted that the sudden disruption in the state’s traditional supply chain has wide-ranging effects. Students and professionals living away from their homes depend heavily on these food services, and establishments such as choultries, hostels, and event venues are facing uncertainty. This situation is particularly concerning as many social and community events are scheduled, and these facilities rely on commercial LPG for food preparation.

Request for Timely Resolution

The Chief Minister urged Hardeep Singh Puri to take action to ensure a sufficient supply of commercial LPG for all affected businesses, including hotels, community halls, choultries, and any other commercial establishments. Siddaramaiah suggested that appropriate instructions to Oil Marketing Companies could alleviate the current supply issues. A timely intervention is necessary to help maintain smooth business operations and prevent inconvenience for the thousands of citizens who depend on these services for their daily meals.
