Karachi Faces Water Crisis Following Major Pipeline Burst

The CSR Journal Magazine

Karachi is currently experiencing a significant water shortage after a critical failure at the Dhabeji Pumping Station led to a major rupture in a supply line. This incident has raised substantial concerns regarding the city’s already strained infrastructure. The disruption resulted in the wastage of millions of gallons of water and affected supply to essential neighborhoods.

The incident took place late on a Sunday night when an unexpected power failure caused several pumps at the K-III Pump House and Phase-II system to shut down. The abrupt stoppage created extreme pressure changes within the pipeline network, ultimately leading to the burst of a 72-inch main line. A considerable amount of water spilled into surrounding areas before authorities managed to control the situation.

Emergency repair operations commenced immediately, with technical teams working around the clock to tackle the damage. However, officials expressed serious concerns regarding the recurring power failures at the Dhabeji facility, labeling them as a significant threat to Karachi’s already overtaxed water supply system. They urged K-Electric to provide a stable power supply, warning that ongoing issues could exacerbate the situation.

The breakdown has severely impacted several heavily populated localities, including Korangi, Landhi, Malir, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and portions of District Central. Residents in these regions may experience acute shortages for a duration of 24 to 48 hours. Local authorities have advised citizens to conserve water and expect delays, intensifying the anticipated demand for water tankers in the affected areas.

Officials from the Water Corporation indicated that while repairs could be completed within a day, the restoration of normal supply levels may take additional time due to the need for stabilizing pressure gradually. Partial restoration could potentially begin at night, contingent upon the absence of further complications during the repair efforts.
