Kanpur Hospital Negligence: Patient Dies After Being Left Unattended for 11 Hours

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a disturbing case of alleged medical negligence, a 25-year-old man died at Kanpur Dehat Medical College in Uttar Pradesh after being left unattended for nearly 11 hours. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and prompted an official inquiry by district authorities.

The patient, identified as Sundar, was brought to the emergency ward around 1:15 pm on Saturday by unidentified persons. He was unconscious and vomiting continuously, with doctors stating that his condition was critical. He was referred to Kanpur’s Hallet Hospital for further treatment.

No Ambulance: Patient Left Alone for Hours

With no family members or attendants present, hospital staff reportedly informed the local police and requested that a security guard accompany the patient for transfer. However, conflicting reports have emerged, while police claim they sent a guard, the hospital says no one arrived. Compounding the issue, there was allegedly no ambulance available to shift the patient.

As a result, Sundar remained in the emergency ward without further medical intervention. By 11 pm, his condition had worsened and he passed away. Shockingly, his body was left in the same bed overnight.

Decomposing Body Raises Alarm

According to eyewitnesses, the stench from the decomposing body forced other patients in the ward to leave the room. The incident came to light only the next morning when attendants of other patients raised concerns about the smell. At around 9 am on Sunday, the body was finally removed by an outsourced hospital sweeper.

District Magistrate Kanpur Dehat visited the hospital after learning about the incident. Expressing deep dissatisfaction over the negligence, he ordered an inquiry and instructed staff to immediately shift the body to the mortuary. Chief Medical Superintendent AK Singh and Medical College Principal Sajjan Lal Verma have both confirmed that internal investigations are underway.

The incident has raised serious questions about emergency care protocols and coordination between hospital administration and local authorities in government-run medical institutions.
