John Cena Denies Inviting Brock Lesnar for Summer Slam Showdown

WWE Superstar John Cena confirmed that he never invited Brock Lesnar to fight him at SummerSlam, which happened on Sunday. He spoke about this on Adam’s Apple YouTube channel. Cena said, “Well, I’ve been saying the same thing for 25 years. They deal ’em, I play ’em. I’m just really excited. We got like 12 of these things left.” He further added that he thinks SummerSlam was an indication from the audience where everybody kind of knows that a book is closed. “And just because I close my book in December, that doesn’t mean the WWE closes its books. They got to continue their programming going forward. So, they’re just trying to make the most exciting show for the fans, man. I got a dozen of them left. They deal ’em, I play ’em.”

Two days before defending the WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam Night 2, John Cena shocked fans on SmackDown by cutting a promo that effectively ended his five-month heel run and marked his return as a babyface.

This led to a cheer, as he continued with an intense street fight with Rhodes, that concluded with Rhodes reclaiming the WWE Championship he had previously lost to Cena at WrestleMania 41.

Despite the fact that Cena lost, audiences gave a standing ovation. While Cena was soaking in the appreciation, Brock Lesnar entered, two years after his last match in 2023. As soon as Lesnar entered, he laid Cena out with an F-5, making the proclamation of a final match.

This return of the Beast Incarnate was controversial, as he has numerous lawsuits against him that were filed by former WWE employee Janel Grant in January 2024. Grant has alleged that McMahon had offered sexual services from her to Lesnar as a contract negotiation in 2021. She said she created “personalized sexual content” for Lesnar at McMahon’s behest.

Post the SummerSlam event, Triple H said that Lesnar’s return could be because of Cena’s indirect request to fight during his retirement year.

Lesnar said, “For me, this is sort of … this is John Cena’s wishlist. … It’s him writing the last chapter of his book, and I think people saw a conversation with us where he said we’d have to screw it up pretty badly to ruin his career.

But it’s not about that for me. It’s about John being able to go out the way he wants to go out, to write his chapter. I know what that’s like as a performer. I know what that’s like for everybody to feel that, and I think for John to be able to do what he wants to do. … One of the very first things I said to him was, ‘Who do you want, and how?’ And we’re working through that.”

However, the statements made by Cena and Triple H have been contradicting.
