Indian Railways has sanctioned Rs 223 crore for the implementation of Kavach Version 4.0 over a route length of 614.75 kilometres in the Varanasi Division of the North Eastern Railway. This decision, announced on September 29, is aimed at enhancing railway safety through the use of indigenous technology. The project is expected to bolster the safety framework surrounding train operations in the region.

Benefits of Kavach Technology

Kavach is an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system that has been developed domestically to improve operational safety across the Indian railway network. The technology is designed to prevent occurrences of Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) by automatically applying the brakes when necessary. In addition, it facilitates safer train movements by continuously monitoring operational parameters, effectively reducing the risk associated with railway operations.

The integration of the Kavach system in the Varanasi Division will extend coverage to previously unmonitored sections, enhancing the overall protective measures in place for trains. This initiative is part of a broader commitment by Indian Railways to employ indigenous technologies effectively and ensure reliable railway services across the country.

Furthermore, the enhanced safety framework from the Kavach system is expected to improve not only operational reliability but also public confidence in railway travel. Barbil-Bolanikhadan Doubling Project

In addition to the Kavach initiative, Indian Railways has also approved the Barbil-Bolanikhadan Doubling Project, with an estimated cost of Rs 122 crore. This project spans a distance of 6 kilometres and is intended to upgrade rail infrastructure within a vital mineral transport corridor. This section is critical for facilitating the movement of minerals across regionally significant routes.

Upon completion, the doubling of this stretch is projected to enable an additional freight traffic capacity of 8.9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The upgrade will help in alleviating delays currently experienced by freight trains, making the movement of goods more efficient. Currently, the Barbil-Bolanikhadan line operates as a single line and carries an average of 9 MTPA related to iron ore traffic.

The Barbil-Bolanikhadan route primarily transports high-grade iron ore and pellets coming from SAIL’s Bolani mines as well as private sidings. This includes daily operations involving six loaded rakes that serve major steel plants and shipping ports. The approval of this project anticipates an increase in traffic from planned expansions in SAIL’s mining and port capacities, thereby addressing potential infrastructure bottlenecks.

The induction of these projects aims to enhance the operational efficiency and safety of Indian Railways, particularly in the Varanasi Division and the Barbil-Bolanikhadan route. As the railway network continues to expand and modernise, the effective implementation of new technologies and infrastructure upgrades will play a crucial role in meeting the growing transport demands of the country.
