“Hand Nearly Chopped Off”: Indian-Origin Man Brutally Attacked with Machete by Teen Gang in Australia

The CSR Journal Magazine

Amid the rising assault cases on Indians abroad, a new case has come to light. A 33-year-old Indian-origin man, Saurabh Anand was brutally assaulted in Australia. Saurabh became the victim of a brutal machete attack by a group of teenagers in Melbourne. The horrific incident occurred in Altona Meadows on July 19.

The assault left Anand with life-threatening injuries. The incident took place while he was returning home from a pharmacy at the Central Square Shopping Centre around 7:30 PM.

Surrounded by group of teens

According to reports, Anand was on a phone call at the time of the incident. He was suddenly surrounded by five teenage boys and attacked brutally. Anand reported that one of the attackers rummaged through his pockets. Another teen repeatedly punched him in the head until he fell to the ground.

Anand further stated that another attacker pulled out a machete and held it to his throat. In a desperate attempt to protect himself, Anand raised his arm. However, the merciless teen attackers did not stop here, they slashed the machete through his wrist, hand, and down to the bone.

‘My hand was hanging by a thread’: Victim

“They didn’t stop there,” Anand said. “I was stabbed in the shoulder and back. My hand was hanging by a thread.” “My instinctive reaction was to bring my arm up to protect my face and wrist. While I was trying to protect myself, the machete just went through my wrist. The second attack, the machete went through my hand … the third went through my bone.” Anand alleged he was then slashed and stabbed with the machete on his shoulder and back.

“I was just trying to survive,” he said. “All I remember is the pain, and my hand was … hanging by a thread. There were bone ruptures on my arm as well.” “I was just tumbling around, half-concussed, half-conscious.” Mr. Anand was rushed to the hospital after he cried out for help to strangers passing by.

Critical Injuries and Narrow Escape

The victim further stated that despite being severely injured, Anand managed to run from the scene and scream for help. Passersby found him bleeding heavily and called emergency services. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors initially feared his left hand would need to be amputated.

Fortunately, after several hours of surgery involving screws and reconstruction, surgeons were able to reattach the hand. Anand also suffered a fractured spine, head injuries, and multiple broken bones in his left arm.

Four Teenagers Arrested, Probe Underway

Following the brutal incident, the Victoria Police arrested four of the five teenagers involved in the attack. A 14-year-old has been remanded and charged with multiple offences, including intentionally causing serious injury and robbery. Two 15-year-olds were also charged but released on bail, while another 14-year-old is expected to face charges soon. The attackers also fled with Anand’s mobile phone.

Rising Knife Violence in Melbourne

This incident comes amid growing concern over youth crime in Victoria. On the same day, another Indian man in Adelaide was assaulted in a separate incident. Melbourne has seen a rise in knife attacks involving minors, prompting the state government to introduce tougher bail laws in March. Premier Jacinta Allan called the changes the “toughest bail test in the country” for repeat youth offenders.

Anand, now recovering from multiple surgeries, said he is traumatised by the attack and is calling for justice. “I don’t want anyone else in the community to go through what I did,” he said.

Similar incident reported last week

Recently a similar incident took place in Australia last week. An Indian man was allegedly assaulted and racially abused by a group of unidentified men. The brutal assault took place over a minor car parking dispute. The incident took place near Kintore Avenue when the man, Charanpreet Singh, along with his wife was out to see the city’s light displays.
