India and Myanmar Discuss Defence Cooperation Initiatives

The CSR Journal Magazine

India and Myanmar have engaged in discussions to evaluate the progress made on defence initiatives established during previous bilateral meetings. The latest round of talks took place during the third India-Myanmar Defence Cooperation Meeting, which was held in Guwahati on October 7, 2026. This meeting was co-chaired by India’s Defence Secretary, Rajesh Kumar Singh, and Myanmar’s Chief of Armed Forces Training, Lt Gen Pyae Sone Linn.

During this session, the officials reviewed the advancements achieved since the last Defence Cooperation Meeting that took place in Yangon in 2025. The focus of the discussions included the identification of new strategies to augment collaboration in defence training and capacity building.

Myanmar’s representatives expressed gratitude for India’s humanitarian efforts, particularly highlighting the assistance provided during ‘Operation Brahma’ following an earthquake that impacted Myanmar. This gesture underscored India’s position as a supportive neighbour and first responder during emergencies.

Focus on Maritime Engagement and Capacity Building

The dialogue between India and Myanmar also centred around enhancing maritime cooperation between the two nations. This includes fostering training exchanges and the development of Mobile Training Teams (MTTs) that can facilitate capacity enhancement in naval operations. The emphasis was placed on building stronger interoperability and addressing issues related to shared maritime security in the Bay of Bengal region.

Earlier, on May 4, 2026, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the then Chief of Naval Staff of India, held fruitful discussions with Admiral Htein Win, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Navy, in Naypyitaw. This meeting underscored the commitment to deepen navy-to-navy relations and improve maritime security through cooperative initiatives.

During his visit, Admiral Tripathi was formally welcomed with a ceremonial Guard of Honour. The interactions were aimed at addressing emerging asymmetric threats at sea and reinforcing the strategic maritime partnerships that are crucial for regional stability.

Continued Engagements and Strategic Discussions

As part of his visit to Myanmar, Admiral Tripathi met with General Htun Aung, the country’s Defence Minister. The discussions concentrated on the existing state of bilateral ties and the strategic significance these relations hold for regional security. The importance of India-Myanmar defence engagements in promoting a stable and secure regional environment was highlighted during these conversations.

Admiral Tripathi communicated with various senior military officials, including the Chief of Myanmar Navy’s Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Aung Aung Naing, and Training Command Chief Rear Admiral Khun Aung Kyaw. Their discussions also addressed enhancing naval cooperation and operational collaborations.

Furthermore, Admiral Tripathi visited the Naval Training Command in Myanmar, where he was briefed on the training infrastructure and collaborative initiatives between the two navies. He officially transferred several projects undertaken with Indian assistance, including a Containerised Small Arms Simulator and a Rigid Inflatable Boat. These initiatives are aimed at bolstering maritime security consistent with the vision of MAHASAGAR.
