The AK-203 ‘Sher’ assault rifle has successfully advanced into a new phase of indigenous production. Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) has reported that the first rifle, constructed entirely from Indian components, has been produced and test-fired at its facility in Amethi. This development marks a significant achievement in India’s effort to enhance domestic defence production capabilities.

The prototype underwent a series of firing trials, which included burst firing, and according to IRRPL, the preliminary results have been promising. Following this initial success, the company will proceed to manufacture additional indigenous AK-203 rifles aimed at upcoming trials by the Indian Armed Forces, set to commence in September 2026. This represents a pivotal moment for the project.

The AK-203 is notable as it is the first version produced with 100 per cent domestic inputs and materials, a significant milestone in India’s goal of achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The achievement underscores the country’s commitment to reducing dependence on foreign arms imports.

Plans for Further Indigenous Production

In light of the encouraging initial results, IRRPL is geared towards manufacturing a more substantial number of rifles that will undergo trials for the Indian Armed Forces. The company aims to deliver these rifles by the trial date in September 2026, which is the next critical phase in the evaluation of this fully indigenous version of the AK-203. This effort is part of a larger strategy to completely localise the production process.

Currently, IRRPL is working to expand its manufacturing capabilities while equally focusing on optimising production efficiency. To streamline its operations, the company has established a target to produce one AK-203 rifle every 100 seconds. This ambitious objective aims to enhance the overall output and meet the demands stipulated in its ongoing contracts.

This focus on increased production rates is essential for fulfilling the requirements outlined in the existing agreement for AK-203 rifles for the Indian Armed Forces. IRRPL’s dedication to scaling up its operations is considered integral to the success of the project moving forward.

Key Financial Framework and Delivery Timeline

IRRPL is engaged in a contract valued at Rs 5,200 crore, which involves the production and supply of 601,427 AK-203 rifles. As part of this agreement, the company has committed to completing deliveries by December 2030, which reflects an earlier timeline than the original deadline of October 2032. This expedited timeframe is a significant aspect of IRRPL’s strategic planning.

As preparations intensify for additional AK-203 ‘Sher’ rifles, IRRPL’s immediate focus remains on ensuring that the production aligns with the timelines set for the upcoming trials.
