IAF Mi-17 V5 Helicopters Deliver Relief Material to Flood-Affected Bihar

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mi-17 V5 helicopters of the Indian Air Force (IAF) have been deployed to assist in flood relief operations in Bihar, as rising waters and the breaching of the Gandak River have affected numerous regions. The IAF announced that its “Team Silver Falchions” conducted flights throughout the day on October 2, 2026, successfully transporting 10 tonnes of essential relief items to several flood-impacted areas.

The specific locations receiving assistance included Chakia, Prithvipur, Satjoda, Karcholia, and Maker in Saran district. The mission took place under challenging conditions, highlighting the IAF’s dedication to providing support in critical situations.

The IAF expressed its commitment to serving the public during emergencies through their operational efforts, stating that the mission delivered crucial aid to those affected by the floods.

Flood Situation in Bihar

Authorities in Bihar continue to respond to the ongoing flood situation, which has prompted widespread concern. According to a report from the water resources department, on September 28, 2026, a discharge of 5,43,500 cusecs was released from the Gandak Barrage at Valmikinagar, starting at 6 am. This sudden discharge has significantly impacted several downstream districts, including West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur, and Vaishali.

The Gandak Barrage saw discharge rates above 5 lakh cusecs for 13 hours and above 4 lakh cusecs for 32 hours. The sustained high water flow corresponds with heavy rainfall recorded on September 26 and 27 in the border districts along the Gandak River, causing elevated water levels downstream.

Despite the current discharge being lower than the peak discharge of 5,62,500 cusecs observed in 2024, the water level of the Gandak River has reached a new all-time high of 91.25 meters at the Bagaha gauge site. This measurement is 0.35 meters higher than the previous record of 90.90 meters set in 2024, according to the water resources department’s official release.

Continued Support and Monitoring

The IAF remains prepared to extend further assistance as the situation evolves in Bihar. The ongoing state of flood emergency has led to continuous monitoring of water levels and river discharges by local and state authorities. The comprehensive response plan aims to mitigate the effects of this natural disaster and ensure that relief operations are conducted efficiently and effectively.

As the IAF and local agencies collaborate to provide relief, they are also gathering data to improve future responses to similar emergencies. Authorities are emphasising the need for quick mobilisation of resources in order to respond adequately to the pressing needs of the affected populations.

Officials have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and stay updated on safety measures as relief efforts progress. Continuous updates regarding the flood situation and related actions are expected to be communicated to ensure public awareness and safety.
