Humayun Kabir Detained During Rejinagar Assembly Bypoll

The CSR Journal Magazine

During the ongoing Rejinagar Assembly bypoll, reports indicate that Humayun Kabir, the chief of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) and a sitting MLA, was taken into custody. Anandjit Hore, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Beldanga, stated on October 6 that Kabir’s detention was due to an alleged violation of legal protocols during the polling process.

Kabir was apprehended by officers from the Rejinagar Police Department while at his party office in Murshidabad. The SDPO assured that sufficient police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel were deployed across the region to uphold law and order during this crucial voting period. He mentioned that the situation remained stable and manageable.

Claims of Police Interference During Voting

Prior to his detention, Humayun Kabir reportedly cast his vote and raised concerns regarding police interference at various polling booths. He alleged that the police had improperly interfered in the electoral process, undermining the integrity of the voting system. Kabir also mentioned that, over the course of the preceding two months, a total of 64 individuals had been detained by law enforcement.

In statements made to ANI, Kabir accused the police of undermining their duty to ensure public safety and security, claiming that they were obstructing the voting process. He questioned the motivations behind such actions, especially when the current government was already established. Kabir emphasised that the previous election held on April 23 had been conducted without major incidents, contrasting it with the alleged police misconduct in recent weeks.

He urged the police to withdraw and cease their alleged actions, asserting that the conduct of the police was detrimental to the electoral process and the democratic principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

Details of the Bypoll in West Bengal

The bypolls are being held not only in West Bengal but also in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, along with a Lok Sabha seat in Assam. Voting commenced early on the morning of October 6 for the five Assembly seats, which include the Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies in West Bengal. The seat in Nandigram became vacant when Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari opted to retain his position from another constituency after the State Assembly elections.

The Rejinagar constituency was left open following the resignation of Humayun Kabir, who had previously won from Nowda. The Elections Commission of India has confirmed that the counting of the votes is scheduled for October 9. It was also noted that the entire electoral process is expected to conclude by October 11.

This bypoll has drawn significant attention due to the claims made by political figures regarding the conduct of law enforcement during elections. Observers are closely monitoring the situation as the votes are counted and results are anticipated.
