In a tragic turn of events, heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand has severely disrupted daily life, resulting in a heart-wrenching incident reported from Nainital district. At Chitrashila Ghat in the Rani Bagh area of Haldwani, the swift currents of the Gaula River swept away multiple bodies that had been brought for cremation. The river’s rising water levels reportedly carried off not only the bodies but also several funeral pyres, causing profound distress among the deceased’s families.

Severe Disruptions Due to Continuous Rainfall

Continuous rain has led to landslides, effectively cutting off road access to the renowned tourist destination of Nainital from the rest of India and the world. The primary routes connecting Nainital to Haldwani and Kaladhungi have been rendered impassable due to debris accumulation from landslides. Vehicles on the Haldwani-Nainital highway were reportedly caught in the midst of boulders and mudslide debris. Fortunately, no fatalities occurred, although there is a palpable atmosphere of fear among travellers.

In the Kumaon region, approximately 141 roads have been closed as a result of ongoing landslides. This includes national highways, state highways, and rural link roads, connecting districts such as Pithoragarh, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat, and Nainital. The situation is being closely monitored by local authorities to ensure the safety of residents and travellers alike.

The continuous rock falls from the mountains have also led to rivers and streams in the region reaching alarming levels. Observations show that the river Kosi, which flows through Almora towards Ramnagar, has swelled significantly, prompting the administration to issue a high alert for low-lying areas. Additionally, the Shipra River, known for its proximity to the famous Kainchi Dham, is also reported to be on the rise, with increasing water levels posing potential hazards.

In light of the situation, district authorities have appealed to both the general public and tourists, urging them to avoid the banks of rivers and streams. The administration has suggested that travel should only be undertaken on safe routes and when absolutely necessary. The public safety advisory aims to mitigate risks associated with rising water levels and the potential for further landslides.
