Hate Crimes Against Sikhs in US Surge 3,700% Over Decade

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hate crimes targeting Sikhs in the United States have experienced a staggering increase of 3,700% over the last ten years. This trend highlights a concerning rise in directed violence against this community, as evidenced by preliminary data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Reportedly, incidents involving anti-Sikh hate crimes rose from six recorded cases in 2015 to 228 in 2025, indicating a worrying trend during a period when the overall rates of hate crimes showed some decline.

Overall Hate Crime Trends

While hate crimes against Sikhs have surged, a broader perspective reveals a complex landscape. According to the FBI statistics, total hate crime incidents have escalated by 88% from 2015 to 2025. However, in a noteworthy development, the data suggests an 11% decrease in hate crimes in 2025 compared to the previous year, which could signal shifts in targeted behaviours rather than a comprehensive reduction in hostility. Experts, including hate crime analyst Brian Levin, have pointed out that attacks concentrated on specific communities are still prevalent, signalling heightened vulnerability amidst fluctuating overall numbers.

The Sikh Coalition’s findings indicate that Sikhs ranked among the most victimised religious groups in 2024, following Jews and Muslims. Importantly, the formal categorisation of anti-Sikh hate crimes is a relatively recent development, which may contribute to the visible increase in reported incidents as the community becomes more adequately represented in statistics.

Communities Facing Similar Trends

The surge in anti-Sikh incidents is not isolated; other communities have also recorded significant increases in reported hate crimes over the last decade. For instance, crimes motivated by anti-trans sentiments have escalated by 395%, marking the most pronounced rise among all racial and social categories. In addition, anti-Latino crimes rose by 239%, with 2025 witnessing an additional 18% surge, resulting in a record total of 1,014 incidents.

Other communities have similarly experienced rises in targeted violence. Anti-Asian hate crimes have gone up by 195%, illustrating a sustained upward trajectory, while incidents classified as anti-Jewish increased by 123%. Interestingly, although anti-Jewish crimes experienced an upswing over the decade, they have reportedly decreased by 29% in the most recent year following earlier spikes. The anti-Black category saw a 66% rise, and anti-white incidents increased by 51%. Conversely, hate crimes against gay men reflected the smallest increase at 27%.

Concerns Regarding Bias-Driven Violence

The contrasting trends of rising targeted violence alongside a general decline in overall incidents have heightened concerns regarding protective measures and the ongoing persistence of bias-related offences in the United States. As the country grapples with shifting demographic patterns and evolving social sentiments, the need for effective strategies to safeguard targeted communities becomes increasingly urgent. The data gleaned from these reports is likely to ignite renewed discussions about ensuring safety and support for all vulnerable groups within the broader societal framework.
