Hailstorm Disrupts Life in Shimla, Crop Concerns Rise

The CSR Journal Magazine

A sudden and intense hailstorm, accompanied by rain, impacted Shimla on March 16, leading to significant disruptions in the hill town. Large areas of the city were blanketed in hail, resulting in an abrupt drop in temperature. The unexpected weather caught many residents and pedestrians unprepared, forcing those without umbrellas or protective gear to seek shelter under structures and along roadsides as the storm intensified.

Local Residents Voice Concerns

While the storm created challenges for commuters, some locals noted that the rainfall could serve to recharge water resources after a prolonged dry period. Resident Roshan expressed concerns regarding the potential consequences for agriculture, stating, “The sudden rainfall has increased difficulties for people. While rain is good, a hailstorm can cause problems as it may damage crops. Garlic crops may not be affected much, but normal rainfall would have been better.”

Another local, Diksha Jamwal, highlighted the adverse impact of the weather on both daily life and agriculture. She mentioned that children on vacation are particularly affected, saying, “The sudden hailstorm has caused problems as the cold has increased. It is also not good for crops. Normal rainfall would have been better.”

Visibility and Temperature Challenges

During the hailstorm, the sky darkened as dense clouds enveloped the town, prompting residents to turn on lights in their homes and vehicles during the day. As of now, authorities have not reported any significant damage; however, the hailstorm did lead to temporary interruptions in normal movement across the town.

Weather Forecast and Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that a new western disturbance is expected to influence northwest India starting the evening of March 17. The effects of this disturbance are anticipated to impact Himachal Pradesh from March 18 to March 21. IMD Scientist Shobhit Katiyar informed that light rainfall, along with thunderstorm activity, is likely on March 19 and 20, with snowfall expected in higher elevations.

Furthermore, the IMD has issued an Orange Alert for March 18 and 19, warning of possible hailstorm and thunderstorm activity across several districts, including Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Kangra, and Sirmaur. Katiyar noted that the recent rain activity has contributed to alleviating the rainfall deficit in the state, which previously stood at nearly 98 percent. The situation is expected to improve further with the approaching weather system.
