A bungee-jumping mishap in Rishikesh left a 24-year-old man from Gurugram seriously hurt after the cord snapped during his descent, raising urgent questions about the safety standards of adventure sports facilities in the area.

Man Critically Injured

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at the Thrill Factory adventure park in Shivpuri, Tehri Garhwal. Sonu Kumar, a BA student from Gurugram, jumped from the platform at around 4:37 pm. Witnesses said that the cord broke when he was halfway through the descent, causing him to fall onto the roof of a nearby structure. CCTV footage captured the entire accident.

“He was leaping off the platform with the bungee cord properly attached, and suddenly it snapped,” a bystander said. The man suffered serious injuries to his chest and left arm and was rushed to AIIMS Rishikesh, where he is receiving medical care. Hospital authorities confirmed that he is under close observation.

Eyewitnesses criticised the park’s management, claiming staff were not following standard safety procedures and no medical team was immediately available at the site. One bystander said he had to transport Sonu to the hospital himself due to the severity of his injuries.

Local authorities have launched an immediate investigation. Tehri Garhwal District Magistrate Nikita Khandelwal confirmed, “I have ordered an inquiry into the matter and all activities at Thrill Factory have been suspended until the probe is complete. A safety audit of all companies involved in adventure activities is also being conducted.”

Police from Muni Ki Reti station stated that a technical team will inspect the equipment and determine if operator negligence or mechanical failure caused the accident. “We will check if the firm is complying with all norms,” an officer added. An FIR has not been registered yet as the victim’s family has not filed a complaint. Authorities said they will record Sonu’s statement once he receives medical clearance.

Thrill Factory offers multiple high-risk activities, including rope cycling, suspended catch air device (SCAD) jumps, and reverse bungee jumping. The viral video of the accident has sparked public outrage, with many social media users criticising inadequate safety measures and calling for stricter regulation of adventure sports.
