Gujarat Voter Base Drops 13% After Intensive Roll Revision, 77 Lakh Names Deleted

The CSR Journal Magazine

The electoral rolls in Gujarat have witnessed a notable contraction of 13.4%, resulting in a total of 4.4 crore voters. This change follows the completion of a special intensive revision process, which led to the deletion of over 77 lakh entries from the 2025 voter list. The final list, which was published recently, saw the addition of approximately 9.5 lakh new voters.

Process of Voter Roll Updates

The reduction in the overall number of registered voters caps two comprehensive rounds of review. Initially, 73.7 lakh names were removed when the draft rolls were released last December.

This process involved updates to mortality records, migration data, and the rectification of erroneous registrations. Following further scrutiny, another 3.9 lakh names were eliminated prior to the publication of the final rolls. Between the draft and the finalized lists, there was an increase of 1.3% in the electorate, primarily driven by first-time voters.

Reasons for Voter Deletions

The substantial drop in voter registrations has been attributed to several factors. Approximately 40 lakh individuals were found to have relocated permanently, while 18 lakh were deceased. Additionally, over 9.8 lakh could not be reached at their registered addresses, and around 3.8 lakh were found to hold duplicate voter cards. Moreover, 1.9 lakh voters had their names omitted for various other reasons, leading to a total decrease of nearly 77 lakh voters.

Details on District-Specific Voter Changes

In the context of district-level statistics, Ahmedabad has emerged as the district with the highest voter count, boasting 49.1 lakh registered voters in the final rolls, an increase from 48 lakh in the draft list. It also saw the largest influx of new voters, adding approximately 1.5 lakh individuals. In terms of percentage growth, Dang recorded the most significant proportional increase at 2.15%, although its overall voter base remains lower at 1.9 lakh.

Additional Districts with Noteworthy Trends

Other districts such as Porbandar, Jamnagar, Botad, Chhota Udepur, and Gandhinagar also experienced meaningful increases in voter registrations. Porbandar reported a growth rate of 2.1%, while Jamnagar and Botad saw increases of 2% and 1.9%, respectively.

Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot also reported substantial additions to their electorates, reflecting trends in migration and youth enrolment. Surat registered the addition of more than 1 lakh voters, while also having the highest deletions at 85,734 among urban centers.

As Gujarat continues to refine its electoral rolls, the changes underscore ongoing efforts to ensure updated and accurate voter records, fostering a more engaged electorate in future elections.
