The Gujarat government has unveiled a plan to eliminate overhead electricity wires in urban areas by 2030. This initiative, known as the Gujarat Wire-Free City Mission, aims to implement an underground power distribution system across all cities and towns within the state. The state Cabinet has approved this project, which is set to affect all 17 municipal corporations and 151 municipalities in Gujarat.

Minister Jitu Vaghani announced this ambitious initiative, asserting that Gujarat’s goal is to transform its urban centres into wire-free environments. To kick off this project, the government has allocated Rs 500 crore for the first phase.

Details of the Underground Power Initiative

The mission encompasses more than just the removal of above-ground power lines. It plans to convert approximately 14,600 circuit kilometres of high-tension overhead lines and over 31,400 circuit kilometres of low-tension lines into an underground system. In total, the initiative will cover roughly 46,000 circuit kilometres of electricity distribution networks across Gujarat.

The initial phase will concentrate on transforming existing 11 kV overhead power lines into underground cables. Subsequent phases will focus on relocating low-tension distribution lines underground, further enhancing the project’s scope and effectiveness.

The government anticipates that these changes will significantly improve the reliability and safety of electricity supply while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of urban environments. Removing visible power lines and infrastructure is seen as a way to make cities more visually appealing.
