Gaurav Gogoi Submits Nomination for Jorhat Constituency in Assam Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 24, Gaurav Gogoi, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, officially filed his nomination as the candidate for the Indian National Congress from the 100 No. Jorhat Legislative Assembly Constituency. Accompanied by a large group of supporters, Gogoi organized a rally that concluded at the office of the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner, where he submitted his nomination papers.

Tribute to Family Legacy

Prior to his nomination, Gogoi paid homage to his father, the late Tarun Gogoi, a former Chief Minister of Assam, as well as to his grandparents at his residence in Jorhat. He emphasized his commitment to upholding their ideals and dedication to public service. During his campaign, Gogoi highlighted a message of communal harmony and visited various places of worship, including a gurdwara, temple, namghar, mosque, and church, in Jorhat to seek blessings.

Other Candidates Join in Filing Nominations

Alongside Gogoi, candidates Pran Kurmi from Titabor and Pallabi Saikia from Teok also submitted their nominations. Speaking to the media, Gogoi extended best wishes to all candidates from the Asom Gana Parishad, Raijor Dal, and Congress who participated in filing their nominations that day.

Strategic Conversations on Party Dynamics

Gogoi responded to Titabor MLA Bhaskarjyoti Baruah, who filed as an independent candidate, stating that discussions would occur regarding his decision. He expressed hope that Baruah would not take actions against the interests of Congress. Gogoi mentioned that prior discussions had already taken place and that further dialogues would continue to ensure alignment within the party.

Criticism of Current Governance

Addressing the challenges of the upcoming elections, Gogoi remarked that ultimately, it will be the people who decide the future direction of the state. He stated, “The people will decide whether they desire a clean and new Assam or the kind of governance associated with Himanta Biswa Sarma.” He criticized the BJP-led administration, claiming that it has strayed from its founding principles, asserting that the residents of Assam are now calling for change and a corruption-free governance model.

Response to BJP’s Internal Decisions

In response to the denial of a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket to Minister Nandita Garlosa, Gogoi expressed that she should not have been excluded. He alleged that Garlosa faced sidelining due to her opposition to land allocations in Dima Hasao to large corporate entities without appropriate local consultation. He reaffirmed Congress’s support for tribal leaders who advocate for the rights of marginalized communities rather than those who align with large corporations.

Additional Nomination Filings

Meanwhile, candidates for Dispur, New Guwahati, and Jalukbari also submitted their nominations at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Hengrabari after conducting significant rallies. Both Mira Borthakur’s and Shantanu Bora’s rallies commenced from prominent locations in the area, with AICC General Secretary and APCC in-charge Jitendra Singh present to support the candidates during the filing process.

Focus on Future Governance

Jitendra Singh observed that the citizens of Assam are increasingly aware of issues such as corruption and maladministration under the current Chief Minister. He highlighted that the alliance aims to establish a new government led by Gaurav Gogoi by 2026, reflecting the desire among the populace for a transformation in governance. On the final day of nominations, several other candidates affiliated with Congress and its alliance submitted their nominations across various constituencies where filings were pending.
