State of Siege: Fresh Gang-Rape Horror of Medical Student in Durgapur Deepens West Bengal’s Crisis of Safety

The CSR Journal Magazine

Durgapur: The safety of women in West Bengal, particularly within educational premises, has been thrown into stark relief following the alleged gang-rape of a second-year female medical student from an out-of-state private college in Durgapur. The horrific incident reportedly occurred last Friday evening in a jungle area immediately adjacent to the college campus, marking yet another brutal assault that has shaken the state.

Brutal Assault Near Campus Perimeter

The victim, a young woman from Jaleswar, Odisha, was reportedly out with a male classmate to get a snack outside the college gates. According to police sources, their outing turned into a nightmare when several miscreants confronted them, began harassing them, and successfully chased off the male friend. Finding the student isolated, the attackers allegedly dragged her by force into a nearby wooded area behind the private hospital attached to the college. There, she was subjected to a brutal gang-rape and physical assault. After the unspeakable crime, the perpetrators also snatched her mobile phone before fleeing the scene.

The trauma has been severe, and the student is currently receiving medical attention in a hospital. The college authorities have since lodged a formal complaint with the Newtownship Police Station, which has launched a full-scale investigation. However, a major concern remains: as of now, the police have been unable to identify or apprehend any of the accused, fueling public anger and anxiety.

Family Vows to Leave the State

The emotional distress and profound loss of trust felt by the victim’s family are palpable. Her father, speaking out about the horrific incident, expressed his resolve to take his daughter out of West Bengal, citing a complete failure of the security framework. “My daughter is not safe here,” he stated firmly. “I will not let her study here anymore. I will take her home.” This decision highlights a growing crisis of confidence in the state’s ability to protect its residents, particularly those who come from other regions for education.

Echoes of RG Kar and Kasba: A Systemic Failure

This new case in Durgapur has immediately drawn parallels to other recent high-profile sexual assault cases that have rocked West Bengal, indicating what many see as a systemic failure to ensure justice and deter crime.

The RG Kar Medical College Hospital case, which involved the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor on campus, led to nationwide outrage and protests by the medical fraternity. Similarly, the Kasba Law College case, where a student was allegedly gang-raped inside the college premises, brought intense scrutiny on institutional security and accountability. In both instances, the public discourse focused heavily on initial police action, alleged cover-ups, and the long road to justice.

Archana Majumdar, a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), forcefully articulated this frustration. Condemning the Durgapur incident, she linked it directly to the impunity seen in previous cases. “The incidents of sexual abuse and rape are on the rise because the perpetrators are not being immediately apprehended and punished correctly. We are not seeing the ultimate punishment, like a death sentence, for rapists or murderers in West Bengal. We continue to see delays in justice and a perception that some ‘invisible hand’ prevents the appropriate, severe punishment for the guilty,” she said.

Local political voices, particularly the BJP leadership, have echoed these sentiments, urging authorities to avoid the kind of alleged obfuscation and cover-up that marked the initial stages of the RG Kar investigation. The collective demand from the public, civil society, and political opponents is for a swift, transparent, and rigorous investigation that leads to the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the Durgapur culprits, thus restoring some measure of faith in the state’s commitment to women’s safety. This new tragedy is a grave reminder that the crisis in public safety is far from resolved.
