Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday challenged the Narendra Modi government at the Centre over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. Abhishek said that if the Centre supports the SIR proposed by the Election Commission (ECI), then on moral grounds the Lok Sabha should be dissolved and fresh elections should be held.
The Trinamool Congress’s All India General Secretary said, “The Election Commission says that the voter list is wrong and full of irregularities. The question is, the Lok Sabha elections were held on this voter list a year ago. If the Indian government really supports this statement of the Election Commission, then the government should also come forward. For the sake of morality, the Lok Sabha should be dissolved first. If someone really supports SIR, then we have to say that the people of this country are being cheated.”
Abhishek has thrown several challenges not only to the government but also to the Election Commission. The Trinamool Congress’s All India General Secretary said, “If the current Election Commissioner really thinks he is impartial, then do SIR for the entire country instead of making corrections in the vote-oriented states. If you are really impartial, then understand the chronology. First dissolve the Lok Sabha. Do SIR for the entire country and then go to the elections. Face the people.” In fact, the opposition camp is increasing pressure on the Center on the SIR issue. Trinamool is taking a leading role in this. It remains to be seen how the BJP responds to Abhishek’s new challenge.
Taking to X on Wednesday afternoon, he wrote:
The EC has stated that the voter lists across various states on the basis of which the GENERAL ELECTIONS were held barely a year ago in 2024 are FAULTY and riddled with IRREGULARITIES.
If that is indeed the case, and if the GoI agrees with the EC’s assessment, then the first…

India Alliance’s protest against SIR
The India Alliance is jointly protesting against the SIR and the errors in the voter list. Just a couple of days ago, opposition MPs were subjected to harassment in the Election Commission headquarters raid. On Tuesday, Abhishek challenged the Centre, saying that if it has morality, it should dissolve the Lok Sabha and conduct SIR across the country. On Wednesday, he posed the same challenge on social media and once again challenged the BJP.
