The Kerala Police have initiated a criminal investigation concerning an AI-generated video that allegedly targets Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission of India (ECI). The investigation involves both the X platform and an account operated by a user identified as Laxmi N Raju (@valiant_Raju), in connection with the dissemination of this video.

Allegations of Misleading Content

Authorities, including the ECI, have stated that the video is allegedly designed to mislead viewers and undermine the credibility of essential constitutional entities during a critical electoral period. The video, which lasts for 77 seconds, has been deemed potentially capable of inciting public disorder.

Legal Provisions Invoked

The First Information Report (FIR) has been filed in Thiruvananthapuram, naming the user account along with other unidentified individuals and the X Corp. The case references various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to provocation, forgery, and public mischief, as well as identity theft under the Information Technology Act.

Investigation into the Video’s Origins

Investigators are currently working to identify those responsible for creating and amplifying the video. They are also exploring any possible coordinated efforts behind its distribution. As part of the investigation, authorities are scrutinizing the role of the platform in managing the video’s circulation.

Platform Accountability and Legal Action

Law enforcement officials have indicated that the platform did not take adequate action to remove the video despite receiving prior alerts. Takedown notices have subsequently been issued, and measures have been implemented to prevent further sharing of the video, in accordance with election regulations.

Public Advisory Issued by Police

In light of these events, the police have released a public advisory cautioning against the sharing of unverified or manipulated content during the electoral process. Individuals have been warned that any efforts to distort the electoral mechanism will lead to severe legal consequences.
