Family of Youth Found Dead in Kashmir Stream Demand Inquiry

The family of the 23-year-old, Imtiaz Ahmed Magray, whose body was recovered from a stream in the Kashmir valley by the army, demand an investigation into the matter. This demand is supported by political leaders from both the National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party of the state. The family alleges that Magray, who was picked up by the army some days ago, was killed while in custody.

Meanwhile, the police claim that the man jumped into the river while leading authorities to a terrorist hideout.

The deceased was a resident of Kashmir, Kulgam.

Politicians Speak

Magray’s death has attracted political attention. Health and Education minister of the state, Sakina Itoo, visited Magray’s family on Sunday and called for further investigation.

“It is unfortunate that an atmosphere of fear has been created. I want to request LG Sahib- Imtiyaz Ahmed was taken from his house, and his body was recovered; There should be a judicial enquiry into it so that the truth comes out,” it said.

“His family also went to the camp and was told that he would be released soon,” Itoo added.

Former chief minister and PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti, also commented on the incident and said, “Yet another body has been recovered from a river in Kulgam, raising serious allegations of foul play. Local residents say Imtiyaz Mare was picked up by the army two days ago, and now mysteriously his body has surfaced in the river.”
