Family Caught Stealing Bedsheets And Towels from 1st AC Coach of Delhi-bound train

The CSR Journal Magazine

A shocking incident on the Purushottam Express, which runs between Puri and Delhi, has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread public condemnation. A family traveling in the first AC coach was caught stealing bedsheets and towels provided by Indian Railways for passenger comfort. The incident was recorded on video by railway staff and ticket examiners (TTEs) during the deboarding process at a station. In the video, railway officials confront a woman and two men from the family after discovering multiple sets of bedsheets and towels stuffed in their bags.

The railway attendant, speaking in Odia, is heard saying, “Sir, see here, bedsheets and blankets are coming out of all the bags. Towels, bedsheets altogether, four sets. Either return them or pay Rs 780.” The family members appeared reluctant but eventually returned the items after being confronted on the platform.

When questioned, the family claimed that the bedsheets may have been packed by mistake, with one passenger stating it was an honest error and possibly his mother’s doing. However, railway staff remained unconvinced, emphasizing that such items are meant strictly for use during travel and not for personal retention. The TTE further warned the family that the issue could escalate under the Railways Act if not resolved immediately.

Public Outrage and Calls for Stringent Penalties

The viral video has sparked a storm of outrage across social media platforms, with many users branding the act as “disgusting,” “shameless,” and a serious breach of public trust. Given that the accused were traveling in a premium class, the first AC coach, many expressed disappointment that such theft could occur despite the comfort and privilege afforded to these passengers.

One user commented, “Travelling in 1st AC is a privilege, but stealing bedsheets shows a lack of respect and honesty. Let’s value public resources and maintain decorum.” Another highlighted the impact on India’s image: “These kinds of people bring us shame nationally and internationally.”

Several voices called for more severe repercussions, including lifetime bans on railway travel for offenders and heavy fines. Some suggested a refundable deposit system for bedding items to prevent such incidents. Others observed that theft of small items like linens is not necessarily linked to economic status but sometimes a compulsive behavior.

Indian Railways’ Role and Response

Indian Railways provides bedsheets, blankets, and towels free of cost to passengers traveling in sleeper and air-conditioned classes on long-distance journeys to ensure comfort. These items are cleaned and maintained regularly by railway staff and are expected to be returned after the journey ends. Theft or misuse of such railway property poses a significant challenge for the railways, which is already grappling with issues like overcrowding, cleanliness, and quality of food.

The official Railway Seva account responded to the viral video on social media, stating that the matter has been escalated to the concerned officials for necessary action. The Indian Railways has yet to issue a detailed statement but is expected to take strict steps to deter such incidents.

Respecting Public Resources

This incident highlights a recurring issue within Indian Railways, the misuse or theft of publicly provided amenities. While Indian Railways remains one of the most extensive and heavily used rail networks globally, incidents like these underline the urgent need for greater civic sense among passengers. Respect for public property is crucial to maintaining the quality and sustainability of services offered.
