Enjoy The Darkness To Avoid Light Pollution
Mumbai is referred to as a city that never sleeps. No matter what time of the day or night one can always find people awake, on the road, working, driving or just enjoying the beautiful lights of the night. This contributes to the Light pollution in the city.
Light pollution is the unnatural over illumination of an area which is often obtrusive. The easiest way to determine this kind of pollution is to check if the stars are visible in the night skies. And whether or not we are aware of light pollution, we can always vouch for the fact that star sighting is a rare instance in Mumbai.
Light pollution is mostly disregarded. However, it causes adverse effects to the health. Excessive exposure to light pollution can cause various sleep disorders, mood fluctuations, retinal damage, reduced sexual drive and sperm production and even genetic mutation.
Light pollution affects the flora and fauna in negative ways. Birds for example rely on natural light for their day to day activities. They rely on longer days for breeding. They migrate after determining the climate change based on the sunlight. With so much of light pollution, they get confused and do not plan their life appropriately which leads them to starvation and death a lot of times. For fauna, natural light is the main source of their growth. The artificial lights do not allow them required rest during the night causing their day processes to not work efficiently. It also affects the health and life cycle of their pollinators causing loss in reproduction and fertility.
The light pollution is caused by mainly the LED banners placed all around the city, headlights of the vehicles and the lights placed everywhere around a construction area to carry out the construction work at night in order to finish it before the traffic starts in the day. With metro constructions happening everywhere in the city, the light pollution is at its peak currently.
There is not much that we can do to reduce the pollution occurring due to the construction at night. However, there are certain kinds of light pollution that we as individuals can prevent.
- Avoid driving or traveling at night. The headlights do not only harm the drivers but its glare can hurt anyone causing serious dangers to the eye sight.
- Place motion sensor lights in our corridors or front yards and back yards. This way you have the light when you need it, but the power is not wasted for the whole night.
- Do not leave the lights on anywhere.
- Avoid decorative lights during celebrations. These lights are unnecessary and cause pollution along with a lot of nuisance for the neighbors.
- Enjoy the darkness
Nature is beautiful. There is a reason purpose for the day and night. It is only wise to not interfere with the nature’s will and enjoy the natural light to lead a healthy, happy and a peaceful life.
