Elderly Couple Married for Seven Decades Passes Away Holding Hands After Car Accident

The CSR Journal Magazine

A married couple from Maryland, who celebrated 70 years of marriage, tragically lost their lives after a severe car accident. Kenneth Oland, aged 90, and his wife Marilyn Oland, aged 88, were critically injured in a two-vehicle collision on February 24. The accident took place shortly after 12:30 PM near the intersection of US Route 15 and Hessong Bridge Road in Frederick County.

According to authorities, Kenneth Oland was driving a Ford Five Hundred southbound on Hessong Bridge Road when he attempted to navigate across US Route 15. Reports indicate that the vehicle did not yield the right of way and was struck by a Chevrolet Cruze traveling north. Both Kenneth and Marilyn sustained severe injuries as a result of the impact. Emergency responders transported them to a trauma center in Baltimore for urgent medical care. The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to a hospital for treatment.

The couple remained under hospital care for several days following the crash. On March 2, six days post-accident, they were taken off life support. Staff at the hospital arranged for their beds to be positioned side by side, allowing them to pass away while holding hands. Medical examinations revealed that Kenneth Oland’s cause of death included complications such as hypoxia, pneumonia, pulmonary contusions, and rib fractures. Marilyn Oland’s death was attributed to cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, and rib fractures stemming from the same incident.

The couple had been married since 1955 and relocated to Thurmont, Maryland, in 1963, where they resided for many years. Their family highlighted the couple’s lifelong partnership and deep-rooted connections within their community. They were regular attendees at the Thurmont Senior Center, where they often enjoyed lunch and played bingo with other seniors. Friends noted that the couple left the senior center just 15 minutes prior to the unfortunate accident.

Kenneth and Marilyn Oland are survived by three children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. The Thurmont Senior Center characterized the couple as an inseparable duo, often seen together. In an official statement, the center remarked that they were “two people who genuinely chose each other every single day.” Their friends and family attested to the couple’s active involvement in the community and their strong relationships with relatives and neighbors.
