The Union Education Minister, Pralhad Joshi, launched a new six-month Certificate (Bridge) Course in Primary Teacher Education (PTE) on September 16 in New Delhi. This initiative aims to support in-service primary school educators holding a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree who require formal certification for teaching students in Classes one to five. The course will be administered through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), focusing on enhancing teaching skills specifically tailored for foundational and primary education.

Training Structure and Content

Designed according to the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) framework, the bridge course comprises academic learning, a minimum of ten days of online contact classes, and at least twenty days of school-based experience. The programme features six theory courses alongside a school-based practicum that will help educators address the varied learning needs of young children. Participants will connect educational theory with classroom practice, ensuring a practical understanding of the material.

The curriculum includes multiple innovative teaching methodologies such as practice teaching, reflective journals, portfolios, video tutorials, and digital learning resources. By incorporating open and distance learning (ODL) methods, the programme allows teachers to balance their professional duties with their studies, facilitating a more flexible approach to continuing education.

This initiative aims to foster inclusive and developmentally appropriate instructional techniques, focusing on child-centred learning. As a result, teachers will be equipped with the necessary tools to effectively engage their students and adapt to diverse classroom settings, thereby improving educational outcomes.

Eligibility and Admission Procedures

The bridge course aligns with the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 8, 2024, in the case of Devesh Sharma vs Union of India and Others. This ruling empowers the NCTE to establish a bridge course specifically for primary teachers who have been appointed without a Diploma in Elementary Education (DElEd) qualification. The programme is targeted at in-service teachers appointed between June 28, 2018, and August 11, 2023, who hold a BEd degree. To be eligible, their appointments must comply with the NCTE Gazette Notification issued on June 28, 2018.

Admissions for the course will be managed online through the official NIOS bridge course portal at bridge.nios.ac.in. Interested teachers can apply by registering, uploading necessary documents, and monitoring their admission status via a user-friendly dashboard. This streamlined process is designed to enhance accessibility for potential applicants.

Instruction will be primarily in Hindi and English. Furthermore, participants will have the flexibility to write their theory examinations in any of the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, ensuring inclusivity for diverse linguistic backgrounds. All course materials, including self-learning resources, will be provided through digital platforms, allowing teachers to access supplementary audio, video, and interactive content to enrich their learning experience.
