The Election Commission on Monday conducted a comprehensive review of Assam’s preparedness for the upcoming Assembly elections, focusing on district-level arrangements and coordination among agencies, according to an official statement. The assessment was carried out over two days starting Sunday, with senior Election Commission officials overseeing the process, the Joint Chief Electoral Officer said.
On the first day, officials evaluated poll preparedness at the district level. The meeting was attended by the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), senior police officers including IGs and DIGs, district election officers, and superintendents of police.
Discussions covered overall election planning, coordination among departments, identification of sensitive areas, and deployment of security forces.
Focus on enforcement coordination
The second day of the review focused on strengthening coordination with enforcement agencies. The session brought together the Chief Electoral Officer, the state police nodal officer, and officials responsible for coordinating state forces.
The discussions centred on the readiness of enforcement machinery, improving inter-departmental cooperation, effective enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, and strict adherence to election laws.
Officials said the two-day exercise provided a detailed overview of poll readiness across administrative and enforcement fronts. The review stressed close coordination among stakeholders, optimal use of resources, and strict observance of legal and procedural requirements to ensure free, fair and transparent elections.
The Assembly polls in Assam are scheduled to be held in March–April.
At present, the ruling BJP holds 64 seats in the Assembly, while its allies — Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) — have nine, seven and three MLAs respectively.
In the opposition, the Congress has 26 MLAs, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has 15 members, CPI(M) has one legislator, along with one Independent MLA.
