Driver Filming Women in X-ray Room at Gujarat Hospital Released after Settlement

The CSR Journal Magazine

A troubling episode unfolded at Sola Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, where Vishnu Makwana, a driver for the dean’s office, was discovered secretly recording videos of women in the X-ray department. These recordings were made without the consent of the patients, infringing upon their privacy. The incident raised significant concerns regarding patient safety and privacy within the hospital environment.

Hospital Response and Internal Resolution

Upon learning of the unauthorized recordings, hospital officials chose to address the situation internally rather than notify law enforcement. This decision to allow Makwana to leave without police intervention has provoked public outrage and scrutiny. Hospital Superintendent Deepika Singhal stated that initial plans included involving the police and seeking help from the 181 women’s helpline. However, an undisclosed agreement was established among the driver, the victim, and her family, ultimately resulting in no legal action being taken against Makwana.

Measures for Enhanced Security

In light of the incident, the hospital administration has declared intentions to bolster security measures in specific areas to avert similar occurrences in the future. Disciplinary actions against the driver have also been mandated. As a long-time employee, with 15 years of service, Makwana had gained unrestricted access to sensitive areas, which he misused to capture unauthorized footage of multiple female patients in the X-ray department.

Concerns about Privacy and Accountability

Following the incident, questions have emerged regarding the duration of the recordings and whether the footage was disseminated further. Hospital sources have not clarified these issues, leaving significant gaps in the understanding of the extent of Makwana’s actions. The situation has amplified discussions about the need for stringent security protocols and accountability measures in healthcare facilities to protect patient privacy.
