Delhi Traffic Police Launches “Digital Lok Adalat” for Efficient Traffic Challan Settlements

The CSR Journal Magazine

On February 14, the Delhi Traffic Police, in collaboration with the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) and the National Informatics Centre (NIC), unveiled a new application called “Digital Lok Adalat.” This initiative aims to provide a faster and more convenient way for citizens to settle their traffic challans.

The application’s launch was officiated by Justice V Kameshwar Rao from the Delhi High Court, alongside senior officials from the Delhi Police and other notable figures.

Addressing Existing Challenges

According to the announcement, the traditional process for settling traffic challans has been plagued by significant delays, particularly in updating notices and challans resolved in Lok Adalats. The Digital Lok Adalat system has been designed as a technological solution to streamline the disposal process, ensuring that updates occur promptly and that the public can access their information with ease.

Unified Access and Real-Time Updates

The new portal offers a centralised platform for traffic challan data, allowing real-time updates on disposed challans. Vehicle owners will receive SMS alerts detailing the status of their settlements. Additionally, the system is integrated with Virtual Court technology, which allows information updates on the Digital Lok Adalat to be reflected across relevant platforms automatically. This integration is intended to minimize redundancy and cut down on processing delays.

Streamlining Court Processes

The Digital Lok Adalat initiative also seeks to simplify court-related procedures. With the automated entry of challan and notice details into the application, the reliance on manual data entry is greatly reduced. This change is expected to lessen human error and significantly lower the time citizens spend waiting for their cases to be resolved.

Impact on Backlog and Efficiency

It is anticipated that this initiative will alleviate the backlog of traffic challans, enabling quicker resolutions for vehicle owners while also minimizing error-prone manual processing. The new system promises to enhance transparency and efficiency in the proceedings of Lok Adalats. Currently, the Digital Lok Adalat has been successfully integrated into Special Lok Adalat proceedings, focusing on enabling eligible traffic challans to be settled more effectively and in a manner centred around citizen needs.

Current Status and Ongoing Commitment

As of now, approximately 192,444 challans and notices have been downloaded for settlement during the ongoing Lok Adalat sessions. The disposal of these items has been managed simultaneously, with SMS notifications disseminated to the mobile numbers of the concerned vehicle owners, keeping them informed throughout the process. The Delhi Traffic Police continues to pursue technology-driven initiatives aimed at improving road safety, enhancing public service delivery, and ensuring convenience for citizens.
