“Dad, I’m Drowning”: Last call of 27-year-old techie before tragic death in Greater Noida

The CSR Journal Magazine

A techie named Yuvraj Mehta, 27 drowned after his car went out of control due to fog and plunged into a basement filled with water in Greater Noida’s Sector-150. Even after a prolonged rescue operation he wasn’t saved. The incident happened when Yuvraj was returning home from work and his car went out of control due to dense fog and collided with a drainage boundary and it slipped deep into the ditch.

The fog was so dense and there wasn’t any reflector on the road, that Yuvraj could not see much and he fell into a 30-feet-deep ditch filled with water. Yuvraj screamed for help, but by the time some passerby could trace the car, it was completely submerged. While this incident happened, the last call Yuvraj made was to his father Rajkumar Mehta, “Dad, I’ve fallen into a deep pit filled with water. I’m drowning. Please come and save me. I don’t want to die.”

Upon receiving the information of the accident, Yuvraj’s father along with local police, divers, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the place in no time, and carried out the rescue operation for almost four hours. Eventually Yuvraj was pulled out and taken to hospital, where he was declared dead.

Who was Yuvraj Mehta?

A 27-year-old Yuvraj Mehta was a resident of Tata Eureka Park Society in Sector-150. Yuvraj worked as a software engineer with Dunnhumby India in Gurugram’s Sector-54, he usually worked from home, but that day he had gone to office, he occasionally went to office.  As per the details shared by police, Yuvraj was returning from work in his Grand Vitara car on Friday night and he was just 500 metres from his home when this accident happened due to zero visibility. And as the level of water was high, the car overturned and started floating. Somehow, Yuvraj managed to get out of the car and call his father and give information about the accident. His father informed the police control room, but by then he had drowned.

Who is responsible for Yuvraj’s death?

Police further shared that even though Yuvraj had managed to climb up the roof of the car and show torch light to indicate that he was alive, dense fog made the rescue very difficult. Both police and fire personnel faced difficulty in entering the chilling water and also there was high risk that the rescue team could be hit by under construction columns inside the basement. The SDRF team reached the spot a little later but could not succeed. It was only after the NDRF team from Ghaziabad came, they managed to pull out Yuvraj but he was declared dead when taken to nearby hospital.

Yuvraj’s family, and villagers nearby are blaming the delay in rescue operations. A complaint has been filed by Yuvraj’s father Rajkumar Mehta, he has accused the Noida Authority of negligence, stating that there was no barricading or reflectors near the drain, “Despite repeated requests, no safety arrangements were made, leading to frequent accidents. Action should be taken against the responsible officials so that such incidents do not recur,” he wrote.
