Congress MP Pramod Tiwari Blames Central Government for Attack on Farooq Abdullah

The CSR Journal Magazine

New Delhi: March 12

Congress Member of Parliament Pramod Tiwari has sharply criticized the central government in the wake of an assassination attempt on Farooq Abdullah, the chief of the National Conference, during a wedding event in Jammu. Tiwari contends that the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Government of India hold direct responsibility for critical security failures. He emphasized that the law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir, which has been transformed into a Union Territory following the abrogation of Article 370, falls under the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Lieutenant Governor.

Pramod Tiwari Slams Centre Over Security Lapse

Tiwari remarked that despite the significant changes in the political status of the region, there has been no tangible improvement in law and order or a cessation of terrorist activities. In his statement, he remarked on the longstanding commitment of Farooq Abdullah, his father Sheikh Abdullah, and the current Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, to serve the people of the region, asserting their popularity among the local populace. Tiwari stressed that the deficiencies in security arrangements are alarming and place responsibility squarely on the central government and the Home Ministry.

Concerns Over Law and Order

The assassination attempt occurred when an individual, carrying a loaded pistol, attempted to shoot Farooq Abdullah at a wedding in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu’s Royal Park. Law enforcement officials reported that the National Security Guard (NSG) personnel assigned to Abdullah swiftly intervened to prevent any harm. The suspect, identified as Kamal Singh, has been taken into custody by the police. They also confirmed that the firearm used in the incident has been recovered and are currently conducting a thorough investigation.

Suspect Apprehended by Security Forces

On the previous day, Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, describing it as an assassination attempt and expressing concern regarding how the attacker was able to approach his father, considering the Z+ security cover provided by the NSG. Abdullah commented on social media, stating, “Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave. The details are sketchy at the moment, but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was asked to get within range to discharge a shot. It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot and ensured that the assassination attempt was foiled. There are more questions than answers at the moment, including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG-protected former CM.” The incident has sparked significant concern regarding safety protocols for protected individuals in high-risk regions.
