Congress Criticises Modi Government Over Rising Inflation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Congress party has levied strong criticisms against the Modi administration regarding what they call “skyrocketing” inflation, questioning the government’s claims of improving conditions for ordinary citizens. Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh cited a media report detailing significant increases in the prices of essential commodities, including a staggering rise in onion prices.

In the Nashik market, reports indicate that onion prices have surged by approximately 76 per cent within a month. Additionally, some states have experienced wholesale prices doubling. This has raised serious concerns about the affordability of basic food items for people in the lower and middle-income brackets.

Ramesh articulated his concerns on social media, highlighting the dual challenges of rampant unemployment and soaring inflation. He expressed frustration that individuals who have worked diligently are now facing job losses while essential items become increasingly unaffordable.

Escalating Prices of Essential Commodities

Ramesh’s comments underscored a broader economic issue, as he lamented how various staples, from sugar to oil, have become elusive to the average consumer. He pointed out, “After sugar, now onions too are slipping out of the common man’s reach.” The Congress leader further noted the government’s lack of adequate measures to counteract these rising prices, particularly as the buffer stock remains depleted.

Moreover, Ramesh highlighted that numerous household items — including milk, fruits, and cooking oil — have reached unaffordable levels for many families. The cumulative effect of these price hikes has reportedly led to a significant shift in household budgeting, placing additional financial strain on families already dealing with limited income.

During a press interaction on Saturday, the Congress intensified its critique by stating that the government’s failure to tackle inflation would not be forgotten by the public. The party has expressed confidence that these economic challenges could influence future electoral outcomes.

Impact on Daily Life and Household Budgets

The rise in living costs has reached a critical point where average consumers are bearing a heavy burden. Ramesh noted that inflation is affecting not only basic necessities but also contributing to wider economic instability, as the household budgets of the middle class become increasingly strained.

According to Ramesh, each month sees a rise in household expenses while income remains fixed, leading to a precarious situation for many families. He articulated the sentiment that “the impact of inflation is now falling on the common man’s plate and daily expenses,” stressing the urgent need for government intervention to rectify this imbalance.

The Congress party continues to advocate for a reassessment of the current administration’s policies, calling for transparency regarding economic management and solutions to rising inflation. The party’s stance reflects a deep concern for the welfare of everyday citizens as they navigate challenging financial circumstances.
