The complete CSR report of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for FY 2023-24

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited is India’s leading Maharatna public sector company (PSU) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. It is engaged in the business of refining of crude oil and marketing of petroleum products. It possesses 14-15% of the country’s total refining capacity. BPCL plays a vital role in the nation’s economic development.

The state-owned enterprise founded in 1976 is headquartered in Mumbai. It’s one of India’s largest public sector energy companies, operating three major refineries in Bina, Kochi, and Mumbai.

BPCL refines, distributes, and markets petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, and other fuels for vehicles and industrial use, lubricants like automotive and industrial oils under the MAK brand, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for cooking and industrial purposes, various petrochemical products for industries and Natural Gas.

Bharat Petroleum’s Refineries at Mumbai & Kochi and Bina at Madhya Pradesh have a combined refining capacity of around 35.3 MMTPA. Its marketing infrastructure includes a network of installations, depots, energy stations, aviation service stations and LPG distributors. Its distribution network comprises over 20,000 Energy Stations, over 6,200 LPG distributorships, 733 Lubes distributorships, and 123 POL storage locations, 54 LPG Bottling Plants, 60 Aviation Service Stations, 4 Lube blending plants and 4 cross-country pipelines.

BPCL aims to become a Net Zero Energy Company by 2040

BPCL ranked top in Indian oil and Gas sector for last 4 years in Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).

With a focus on sustainable solutions, the company is developing a vibrant ecosystem and a road-map to become a Net Zero Energy Company by 2040, in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Bharat Petroleum has been partnering communities by supporting innumerable initiatives connected primarily in the areas of education, water conservation, skill development, health, community development, capacity building and employee volunteering.

In line with this year’s global theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” BPCL has adopted innovative circular economy practices throughout its operations. This includes utilizing post-consumer recycled plastics in lubricant containers and funding the installation of over 1,400 benches made from recycled plastic in government schools through its CSR initiatives.

BPCL CSR spent in FY24

Out of the total CSR allocation of Rs 315.68 crore for the year 2023-24, Rs 158.19 crore was spent during the year benefitting 71,52,010 people. BPCL through their CSR initiatives, has contributed to various social causes, including education, environmental sustainability, health and sanitation, skill development, and community development.

Bharat Petroleum undertakes initiatives to benefit marginalised communities in small towns and villages. 25 aspirational districts have been identified across 10 states of India and spent a total of Rs 6.23 crore in FY 2023-24.

BPCL’s CSR initiatives in FY 24

CSR for Health and Sanitation

BPCL commissioned medical equipment in primary and community health centres, to ensure better diagnostic and treatment facilities. It extended support to the establishment of specialized units such as the Burns Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) facilities and modular theatres for cleft and craniofacial surgeries.

BPCL installed sanitary napkin vending and incinerator machines in government schools and communities, renovated toilets and constructed community toilet units to improve hygiene standards. Additionally, the PSU provided diagnostic kits to Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers and haemoglobin testing meters to BMC primary healthcare centres to promote preventive healthcare.

The oil company also installed tube wells, water vending machines and RO water systems to ensure access to clean drinking water and reduce waterborne diseases.

CSR for Education and Skill Development

BPCL focused on enhancing educational infrastructure, providing necessary learning tools and promoting skill development. In FY 2023-24, the PSU supported the construction and renovation of educational facilities to create a better learning environment for children. BPCL provided smart class set-up, computer sets and photocopiers to schools, ensuring that students and teachers had access to essential technology.

As part of Skill Development initiative, BPCL installed sewing machines, overlock machines, and furniture at vocational training centres to facilitate skill enhancement. Additionally, the oil PSU provided stainless steel vessels and critical kitchen equipment to kitchens, promoting culinary skills and livelihood opportunities.

CSR for Community Development and sports

Under community development, BPCL undertakes projects such as the construction of community halls, toilets, and other essential facilities in rural and urban areas. These initiatives aim to strengthen community bonds and provide necessary amenities for residents.

BPCL has also been promoting sports and recreational activities through the construction of sporting arenas and installation of sports equipment at various locations.

CSR for Environment Sustainability

BPCL focused on the installation of solar-based RO plants, ensuring access to clean drinking water, installed solar streetlights and solar semi-high mast lights at various locations to reduce dependency on conventional energy sources.
The PSU installed an Online Continuous Effluent Monitoring System (OCEMS) to monitor and minimize industrial pollution. It also implemented a lift irrigation system in Sonori village in Maharashtra, enhancing water conservation and agricultural productivity.

In July 2024, Bharat Petroleum announced a transformative reforestation initiative in the Nashik District of Maharashtra. This project, conducted in collaboration with the Forest Department – Nashik, aims to restore degraded lands using advanced drone technology and seedball deployment.

BPCL’s reforestation project utilised 200,000 seedballs distributed by drones, targeting remote and inaccessible areas. The approach addressed the critical issues of rapid deforestation and land degradation, which have significantly impacted the region’s biodiversity, climate resilience, and community well-being.

The project encompassed comprehensive planning, including site selection using GIS mapping, community engagement, seedball production, and drone deployment. The target areas covered 100 hectares across three forest ranges in Nashik District: Sinnar Nashik Range, Hivre Billage, and Ganga Mahalungi Village.

CSR Project Greening Classrooms

BPCL recently launched ‘Project Greening Classrooms’ as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, impacting 70 government schools in the Aspirational District of Shravasti, Uttar Pradesh. This initiative has led to the installation of 1,400 benches crafted from recycled plastic, seamlessly blending sustainability, education, and community engagement into a powerful model. The project also emphasizes integrating plastic waste management and environmental education.
