Denied CM Post, Will Raje Be BJP’s Pick for Vice President?

The CSR Journal Magazine

After the former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned, the post of VP is vacant, and speculations are rife that India could get its first female Vice President. Since 1950, there have been 14 VPs, but none have been a woman. In fact, India has had only two women Presidents till date — Pratibha Patil and the current President, Droupadi Murmu.

In the race for the Vice President’s post, the name of two-time Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje, is the most speculated. Raje’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi has added fuel to the fire, and political chatter is loud. The duo reportedly spoke for around 20 minutes. It is speculated that they discussed cabinet expansion, the Jhalawar school tragedy, and also her push for cabinet positions for her loyalists.

Raje’s meeting, along with the current Chief Minister of Rajasthan Bhajan Lal Sharma’s meeting with Modi, has triggered buzz around the much-awaited appointment. Raje wasn’t made Chief Minister for the third time and was instead offered the position of Speaker, which she did not accept. The central leadership is well aware that Raje can revolt if sidelined, and she has been eyeing a significant post for long. In this context, if she becomes the VP candidate, it wouldn’t be a surprise.

Apart from Vasundhara Raje, another BJP woman candidate in the VP race is the current Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who enjoys complete trust from Modi. Another strong and popular woman in the race is Padma Bhushan awardee Sudha Murty, who took oath as a Rajya Sabha member in 2024.

The rest of the contenders are men. These include RS Deputy Chairman Harivansh Singh, current Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and JP Nadda, who is set to end his term as BJP National President very soon. Even MP Shashi Tharoor’s name is under consideration. Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, former Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, J&K LG Manoj Sinha, and Delhi LG Vinai Kumar Saxena are a few other candidates whose names are being discussed.
