The Aakar initiative in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh aims to empower differently-abled children by providing them with customised training and educational support. Once noted for its difficult terrain and social challenges, Sukma is now witnessing a significant transformation that focuses on inclusivity and self-reliance among children with special needs. This programme marks a crucial step towards integrating these children into mainstream society, enabling them to realise their potential.

Approximately 120 children, who attend various mainstream schools in the district, participate in the programme. The Chhattisgarh government has established Aakar to cater to the unique needs of these children, offering a combination of educational and therapeutic services. The initiative addresses essential areas such as speech therapy, physiotherapy, and special education, incorporating skills like sign language, Braille, computer training, art, music, and sports.

The overarching goal of Aakar is not merely academic education but also fostering independence among the children, allowing them to thrive within society. Through tailored support and training, the children are encouraged to develop their skills and confidence.

Inspiring Stories from Aakar

Among the participants is Pinky Sodhi, an 11th-grade student at Atmanand School, who is actively engaged in various activities at Aakar. Pinky has taken up learning sign language and dance, aspiring to showcase her talents. She shares her enthusiasm about the supportive environment, stating, “I really enjoy studying here. The teachers are wonderful.” Her experience reflects the positive impact of the programme on children who previously felt marginalised due to their disabilities.

Another participant, Madkam Chhotu, faced difficulties with reading and writing but has made significant progress through computer training at Aakar. This training, part of the government’s Comprehensive Education Campaign, has greatly enhanced his proficiency in both Hindi and English. Chhotu’s ability to type and use tools like the ‘Easy Reader’ app exemplifies how technology can bridge gaps in education for differently-abled children.

Teachers at Aakar, such as Keval Deshmukh, provide essential support and have noted that initially, both children and instructors faced obstacles. However, their perseverance has turned challenges into manageable tasks, fostering an effective learning environment for the children. The training sessions emphasise individual capabilities, reinforcing the notion that disabilities do not define one’s potential.

Achievements and Future Aspirations

Many children undergoing training at Aakar have made significant strides in their academic journeys. Currently, around 12 students are pursuing their higher education in various cities, with some advancing to courses like Diploma in Education (D.Ed.) and Bachelor in Education (B.Ed.). Notably, one hearing-impaired individual is now employed in the Postal Department, demonstrating the potential for professional success through the skills acquired at Aakar.

The Aakar programme embodies a broader vision of development and inclusion supported by the Chhattisgarh government. By utilising local resources and a dedicated approach, the initiative is working towards a future where every child can achieve their ambitions, regardless of their challenges. This comprehensive effort reflects an understanding that societal advancement occurs when all individuals are given the opportunity to contribute meaningfully.

While Aakar is just one organisation, its work signifies a transformative model for inclusive education in the district of Sukma. It highlights the necessity of creating supportive environments to help differently-abled children integrate into society, affirming that development extends far beyond material infrastructure.
