BSNL’s Director Vivek Banzal Cancels Prayagraj Visit Amid Viral Protocol Criticism

The CSR Journal Magazine

A planned official visit by Vivek Banzal, the Director of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), to Prayagraj turned contentious after a comprehensive hospitality protocol for the trip was leaked online.

Originally scheduled for February 25, the visit faced backlash due to the extensive arrangements outlined, which included logistics for his reception, ceremonial activities, and post-visit accommodations. This incident has sparked discussions about the use of public sector resources and the prevailing VIP culture.

Comprehensive Visit Guidelines Elicit Reactions

Official communications dated February 19 indicated that an in-depth minute-by-minute schedule had been created for the director’s itinerary. The plan covered various aspects of the visit, including arrangements for a ceremonial bath at Sangam, visits to key religious sites, meal provisions, transportation, and considerations for personal comfort. Special instructions were issued to account for personal items and towels used during the ceremonial bath.

Over 50 Officials Involved in Visit Preparations

To facilitate the visit, over 50 BSNL employees were assigned specific roles to ensure all arrangements were executed smoothly. Dedicated teams were formulated to manage logistics related to transportation, hospitality, bathing, and post-visit duties.

Additionally, the organization was instructed to prepare multiple bathing kits, refreshments, and escort services for the entirety of the itinerary, including the significant visit to the Triveni Sangam and associated temples.

Widespread Criticism Following Document Circulation

The protocol document gained traction on social media, leading to various criticisms regarding the extensive preparations and the implications of expending public resources for such visits.

Observers referred to the outlined protocols as indicative of a “royal treatment,” reigniting debates around the existing VIP culture and how administrative priorities are allocated within public sector enterprises.

Visit Cancelled After Escalation of Controversy

In light of the intense backlash and subsequent escalation of the issue to senior officials, the visit was officially cancelled shortly after the protocol went viral. A confirmation was issued by BSNL’s Public Relations Officer, Ashish Gupta, stating that the Prayagraj arrangements for the director had been revoked and that the previously outlined protocol should be considered null and void. Gupta, however, chose not to elaborate on the criticisms surrounding the planned arrangements.
